A second former Detroit Lions receiver will be joining Darrell Bevell down in Florida with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Marvin Jones Jr. is expected to sign with the Jaguars. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the deal is worth $14.5 million for two years, with $9.2 million guaranteed.
Jones had been one of the most productive Lions players over the past five seasons in Detroit. In 69 game appearances, Jones caught 289 passes for 4,296 yards and 36 touchdowns. His best season came in 2017 when he surpassed 1,100 yards and found the end zone nine times.
But at this point in his career, Jones had made it fairly clear that he was ready for a change of scenery and was excited to hit free agency.
“(I’ll say) the same thing I said five years ago,” Jones said back in December. “I’m a free agent and the free agent process is always exciting, and it’s something I’m obviously excited about, but you never know. We’ll see in March.”
Jones is now the third Lions free agent to have agreed to play elsewhere in 2021. Jarrad Davis agreed to terms with the Jets, while fellow receiver Jamal Agnew has a pending three-year deal with the Jaguars, as well.
Now all eyes turn to Kenny Golladay, who remains the best receiver on the market, yet has had an eerily quiet couple of days, as it appears the wide receiver market isn’t quite as lucrative as many were expecting.
