Let’s worksheet the Lions salary cap situation

Everyone in the NFL is hurting in regards to the salary cap this year. The bump, if there will be one at all, is not expected to be that great, leaving some teams with little room to maneuver as they head into the new league calendar in 15 days. Unfortunately for the Detroit Lions, the past regime left them in such a position.

The cap situation may not be utterly dire—they’re not the New Orleans Saints after all—but it does put a crimp on any thoughts that this team could be seeking top tier free agents this offseason. It also means there’s room for cap casualties, contract restructures, things of that nature; all of which will affect the team’s finances as the Lions work towards a full rebuild.

What does the situation entail? On the latest episode of the Pride Of Detroit PODcast, we break it all down, complete with a bad analogy to “Supermarket Sweep.” We take a close look at who could be cap casualties as the free agency period nears, plus the pressing matter of several contract restructures: new quarterback Jared Goff and tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai.
