The mass overhaul of the Detroit Lions wide receiver room continues. The latest former Lions receiver to find a new home is Mohamed Sanu, who is signing a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers according to his agent Mike McCartney.
Sanu joins Jamal Agnew (Jaguars), Marvin Jones Jr. (Jaguars), and Kenny Golladay (Giants) as Lions unrestricted free agents who have already signed onto a new team for the 2021 season. Danny Amendola remains a free agent who is unlikely to return next season.
Sanu was a late-season addition for the Lions last year. With Golladay out for the last couple months of the season, Sanu got an opportunity to produce and found a decent rapport with Matthew Stafford. In seven games (four starts), Sanu caught 16 catches for 178 yards and a touchdown.
But with a new coaching staff, a new offensive scheme, and a new quarterback, it was clear the Lions were seeking a different kind of receiver than Sanu, or any of the Lions’ free agent receivers, offered. The Lions have gone out and signed four receivers this free agency period, all of whom come with a lot of speed: Tyrell Williams, Breshad Perryman, Kalif Raymond, and Damion Ratley.
