The Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft is underway. Now that you’ve all properly booed Commissioner Jeremy Reisman, it’s time to get this thing started.
The first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is nothing but a formality, but Jacksonville Jaguars interim general manager ejpenland isn’t just going through the motions. Here he is stepping to the podium to announce the first pick.
“With the first pick in the Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select...
... Pause for dramatic effect...
... Trevor Lawrence.
Deciding on who to take with the number one pick in a draft with a quarterback as talented as Lawrence has got to be the easiest decision anyone can make, especially for a team that does not have a real franchise quarterback. I have nothing against Gardner Minshew, he is a serviceable quarterback, but Lawrence is a generational talent that cannot be passed up. Lawrence has an impressive pocket presence, an amazing arm, and great athleticism. He can read defenses well and will look off safeties with ease.
I must admit, there was a small part of me that wanted to throw a major curveball and select tackle Penei Sewell out of Oregon. He is another incredible talent and fits, arguably, a bigger need. However, when you have the number one pick in the draft it is best not to try and be the “smartest guy in the room” (Bob Quinn) and make the obvious choice, the right choice, and that choice is Trevor Lawrence.”
Erik Schlitt’s thoughts:
This selection has been written in pen for some time. If there was any question about Lawrence being the pick, those speculations were washed away at his pro day. Jaguars’ coach Urban Meyer set up camp six feet away from where Lawrence was performing, requested specific throws, then has been noticeably absent from other pro days featuring other top quarterbacks.
Lawrence, it is. The New York Jets are on the clock.
