Things are heating up as the draft is now less than a month away. Justin Fields and Zach Wilson have solidified themselves with excellent pro days, and the recent San Francisco 49ers trade is generating a lot of interesting hypothetical scenarios as to how the top few picks will shape up.
Question of the day: Would you rather the Lions trade up or trade down in this year’s draft?
My answer: I’m team always-trade-down-if-you-can.
Granted, I’ll undoubtedly make an exception should Wilson or Fields fall into reasonable range—quarterback is the only position you trade up for in the first round, especially when you’re at the start of a rebuild. To sell the farm for anyone else at this point would be a huge mistake.
It’s becoming more and more likely, however, that neither of those signal callers will be available at seven. If that’s the case, then the Lions are better off picking up the phone and seeing if anyone in the teens is willing to make a move up. With so many gaping holes and so little talent on the roster, the Lions need quantity at this point If they can pick up a few Day 2 or early Day 3 picks in a trade down, even for 2022, then they can get quantity and quality.
My ideal scenario, assuming Fields and Wilson are gone at seven? Lions trade down into the teens, pick up a couple day one or two picks, and walk away with Jaylen Waddle.
What do you think? Should the Lions trade up? Trade down? Stay put?
