With the Lions under new management, there are a lot of new faces on the roster as Brad Holmes continues to wash away the stink that was left from the Quinntricia era. I’m not sure if, at this point, you can look at the team and really say that any position has greatly improved, but the team is certainly trying to get faster as well as make a true “culture change,” and you love to see it.
There haven’t really been any big splash free agency signings, and that’s exactly what you want to see from a team that is in a “re-tooling” phase and is not quite ready to compete right away. Most of the signings have been one- or two-year deals for a bargain. If the players don’t pan out, then that’s fine, they’re just a filler. If they do pan out, then great, you just found a future piece that could potentially stick around for longer.
Today’s Question of the Day is...
What was your favorite new Lions free agent signing this offseason?
My answer: I don’t think there is a particular signing that stands out way above the rest, but I am very partial to the Jamaal Williams signing.
Signed for a deal worth up to $7.5 million for two years, Williams should be very comfortable as the Lions’ RB2 and gives them a ton of flexibility in the run game. New QB Jared Goff is at his best when the run game is working, and he’s able to capitalize off of the play-action passing game. This signing is a big step in the right direction to accomplish that.
If the Lions can improve the offensive line, then I think they’re in good shape when it comes to re-tooling the offense. They still have more to do in terms of adding skill position players in the passing game, but at least they have a steady stable of running backs.
I may be a little bit biased here as well, because by all accounts, Jamaal Williams seems like an awesome dude and a complete nerd. I can vibe with that.
