After much anticipation, the Detroit Lions have selected a wide receiver. Amon-Ra St. Brown, welcome to Detroit! His brother, Equanimeous, plays for the Packers, and we could see some brotherly competition between the two.

Player selected: Amon-Ra St. Brown

Position: WR

Current players on roster at WR:

  • Geronimo Allison
  • Victor Bolden Jr.
  • Quintez Cephus
  • Tom Kennedy
  • Breshad Perriman
  • Damion Ratley
  • Kalif Raymond
  • Tyrell Williams

Offseason losses at WR:

  • Jamal Agnew
  • Danny Amendola
  • Kenny Golladay
  • Marvin Jones Jr.
  • Mohamed Sanu

Impact:

Few positions have changed as drastically as the wide receiver group. Long-time focal points of the offense Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, and Danny Amendola left in the offseason, and despite the seven receivers currently on the roster, none stood out as sure-fire replacements. St. Brown might not start right away, but he has great potential for a position group severely lacking it.

Tyrell Williams and Breshad Perriman are likely entrenched as the top two options, but with both arriving in Detroit on one-year contracts, St. Brown could step into a starting role sooner rather than later. St. Brown has experience on the outside and in the slot, so he could see multiple looks on offense. The slot could be his early destination, since Williams and Perriman are primarily outside guys, while the slot options like Kalif Raymond and Tom Kennedy are unimpressive.

As a well-rounded receiver, the selection of St. Brown likely pushes everyone except for Williams and Perriman down the depth chart. Quintez Cephus had some good moments as a rookie, but a new regime means he is not guaranteed a spot going forward. The remaining players will likely have to show some special teams prowess to secure a roster spot.
