The Detroit Lions rookie mini-camp is underway and Pride of Detroit was in Allen Park on Sunday taking it all in. One of the things we finally got a look at is the initial jersey numbers assigned to the rookies from the 2021 draft cycle.
While the numbers below are what players wore over the weekend, don’t go ordering your custom Lions jerseys just yet as things are still very fluid. Lions’ veterans have yet to report and the new arrivals will get priority over the rookies: If they want a number, they’re likely going to get it.
There is also the new NFL jersey rule change that will allow a more expanded number pool for players to choose from and some returning players will surely be making a switch. Here’s the newly expanded range:
Quarterback, punter, kicker: 1-19
Running back, tight end, wide receiver: 1-49, 80-89
Offensive lineman: 50-79
Defensive lineman: 50-79, 90-99
Linebacker: 1-59, 90-99
Defensive back: 1-49
As an example of how fluid things are, look no further than Jeff Okudah. At last year's rookie mini-camp, he wore jersey No. 1, then switched to No. 30 in training camp, and just recently changed his number to No. 23, per the team’s website.
