Some surprising news came out of Detroit on Thursday, as Adam Schefter reported that the Lions are interested in signing Todd Gurley. This was unexpected for a few reasons, both given the solid duo of D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams and the steep decline that Gurley has been on since his dominant stretch a few years ago.
The current running back room will not be the Lions’ downfall in 2021, but there are a few other positions that could use some help. While most of the free agent movement has already occurred, there are still a few players like Gurley that remained unsigned who could be contributors in Detroit.
Today’s Question of the Day is:
Which remaining free agent should the Lions sign?
My answer: The name that jumps out most to me is Melvin Ingram. The 32-year-old is definitely not the player he used to be, but he could add some help at the edge position to a defense that really lacks playmakers. He does come with an injury concern, but that could be a benefit in terms of contract.
Another interesting edge option would be K.J. Wright, though he looks likely to return to Seattle. In terms of the secondary, players like Brian Poole and D.J. Hayden could be nice depth pieces that should not cost too much. Either way, the Lions should be focused on the defense, and not taking carries away from a backfield that is already complete.
Your turn.
