Tuesday open thread: Who is the most interesting Detroit Lions player to watch in mandatory minicamp?

The Detroit Lions kick off their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. In terms of how the practices look compared to the organized team activities from the past two weeks, the differences will be small. This is still considered Phase Three of the offseason, which means no contact and no pads.

However, the mandatory part brings at least a little intrigue. Will offensive tackle Tyrell Crosby show up? Will Jamie Collins be excused, or will he show? Plus, for many of the Lions players, this will be their last time taking the field together before training camp at the end of July. With that in mind, coaches may crank up the intensity a little from the past two weeks.

Of course, the most notable different for fans is the media will be in attendance for all three days of minicamp, rather than the one-a-week treatment OTAs get. So prepare yourself for more observations, more press conference, and more racing helmets?

Which player are you most eager to hear about in mandatory minicamp?

My answer: I’m intrigued to see Jamie Collins Sr. in this new defense. Collins has been absent from OTAs as he awaits his newborn son to arrive. There is no guarantee he shows up this week, but if he’s still waiting, Detroit may give him an excused absence.

If he does arrive, I am very curious to see his fit. Collins has struggled outside of a Patriots-style defense in his career, but he’s still likely the most talented linebacker the Lions have. Last week, we saw the linebacking corps get worked by speedy receivers and backs, but if there’s a defender that can keep up with them, Collins has that athleticism.

It’ll also be interesting to see who lines up with Collins as the other inside linebacker in Detroit’s base set. Will it be Alex Anzalone? Will it be Jahlani Tavai?

Regardless, that’s where I’ll be looking when Detroit takes the field on Tuesday.
