Detroit Lions rookies have already reported to training camp over the weekend, but the real fun starts later this week. The team will take the field on Wednesday for their first practice, and that’s when the sparks fly.

As fans, it’s hard not to be excited by every rookie on the roster. Each rookie is a little source of optimism for the future. Whether they’re a first-round pick or an undrafted player, fans will pour their hope into them, dreaming that they’ll be one of the players who turns this franchise around.

And for the 2021 Lions, there are plenty of rookies to get excited about. You’ve got the seventh overall pick and the top offensive line prospect in the draft. You’ve got a pair of defensive tackles that could be the biggest disrupters on the team going forward. There’s a cornerback that fell much further than expected and a wide receiver that could give Detroit production right out of the box. Or maybe you’re a fan of extremely athletic linebackers with a mean college highlight reel.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

Which Lions rookie are you most excited to see in training camp this year?

My answer: It’s the obvious answer, but it has to be Penei Sewell for me. The man hasn’t played football in over a year, but his ceiling seems unlimited. There are some things he did at Oregon that no 17 or 18 year old should be able to do. As he grows older, he’s got a chance to do things that no 22 or 23 or 26 year old should be able to do. And I can’t wait to see that in person—especially with the pads coming on soon.

But if I had to pick someone else, it may be fourth-round linebacker Derrick Barnes. Detroit has struggled for far too long to find a linebacker who can just make plays. Barnes possesses the athleticism and play-making ability to play sideline-to-sideline and drop into coverage.

Now, he’s not going to have those skills polished right out of the box. He’s still fairly new to the position, and the NFL is a huge step up from Purdue football. Still, seeing his potential in Year 1 is going to be exciting, given the linebacker play we’ve been subjected to over the past few years.

Your turn.
