The Detroit Lions’ first cut has leaked. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions have released veteran wide receiver Breshad Perriman.

Perriman entered Lions camp as the team’s presumed No. 2 receiver opposite Tyrell Williams. Unfortunately for Perriman, a former first-round pick, he underwhelmed all of camp. A hip injury in the middle of camp forced him to sit out a week or two, and when he returned it appeared he had lost his place in the starting lineup to Kalif Raymond, who has had a much more productive camp than Perriman.

The Lions gave Perriman one final shot to impress in the preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts, but the wide receiver only caught one pass while dropping two catchable passes.

By letting Perriman go, the Lions are absorbing $2 million guaranteed of his $2.5 million contract.

The question now is what will become of Detroit’s receiver depth. Williams, Raymond, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Quintez Cephus seem like safe bets to make the final 53-man roster. Does Perriman’s release make way for a guy like Tom Kennedy?
