The Detroit Lions have an additional roster spot on their practice squad thanks to the Carolina Panthers. On Tuesday morning, the Panthers announced they have signed kicker Zane Gonzalez from the Lions’ practice squad to their 53-man roster. Carolina made the change after their Week 1 kicker Ryan Santoso missed an extra point against the Jets and was subsequently waived.
That leaves the Lions with Austin Seibert as their only kicker on the roster or on the practice squad. Seibert was added to the team after Detroit claimed him off of waivers following their initial 53-man roster cuts. Seibert had a decent Lions debut on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. He connected on a 49-yard field goal, made both of his extra point attempts, and helped the Lions convert on one of two onside kick attempts. However, he did also push a 51-yard field goal wide left.
The Lions now have an open spot on their practice squad and one open spot on their 53-man roster after placing Jeff Okudah on injured reserve earlier in the week. As of Tuesday afternoon, the team had not announced any corresponding moves.
Interestingly enough, the Panthers also added another player who spent time in Lions’ camp. Cornerback Corn Elder was signed to their practice squad this week.
