Wednesday open thread: Where do the Lions rank among NFL teams heading into Week 1?

Most national media outlets have the Lions in the bottom two teams in the league.

The Lions are not a good team, and that much is for certain until we see otherwise. Amid one of the tumultuous regime changes we’ve seen in Lions history—and we’ve seen lots of regime changes—there’s going to be a lot of roster turnover and it’ll take time to acquire talent. The new front office and coaching staff have a solid vision of what they want to be, but it’s a stark contrast to what the Lions were in 2020 so that change won’t happen overnight.

Question of the day: Where do the Lions rank among NFL teams heading into Week 1?

My answer: dead last.

The Lions have often been pegged with the Houston Texans in the bottom two of most power rankings (as our Erik Schlitt wonderfully compiled here). While the Lions coaching staff certainly gives me more hope than the Texans coaching staff, I think there’s a talent gap wide enough that, at least for this season, the Texans may make up the difference.

No other team is contending for bottomfeeder status as far as we know right now, but every year there’s a team or two that surprise us with how bad they are. Will they be worse than the Lions? Time will tell.

Where do you think the Lions rank among NFL teams heading into Week 1? Let’s hear it.
