The Fix Is In - For the Defense That Is

Some personnel changes seem likely needed to adjust the attitude, and simplifying the schemes seem to be another modification that is called for. So let's examine what are the most likely changes to be made:

Let's go backwards first and move forward. The secondary has some good and bad things happening. Jeff Okudah seems to be settling in. Amani Oruwariye has backslid and maybe isn't trusting the scheme or his teammates. Fortunately, Jerry Jacobs is arriving to step in for awhile to man the other outside corner. The slot is a little more complicated. Bigger might be better. A more physical presence might be just what the doctor ordered. I'm not sure Will Harris, Ifeatu Melifonwu, or maybe Chase Lucas get my vote to start, but probably Harris gets the nod. Obviously losing Tracy Walker is a big loss, JuJu Hughes needs to get another start to see if this will be the answer or not, but I'd also start to see if Melifonwu can make plays and tell him if he wants to start over Hughes, go and earn it. D'Shon Elliott seems to be tackling like crazy, so I'm reluctant to move him out, but if he isn't communicating with the rest of the DBs then I'd be forced to reset the position too. So, my secondary is made up of Okudah, Jacobs, Harris, Hughes, and Elliott, with Melifonwu, Mike Hughes, Chase Lucas, and Oruwariye put in back-up roles for the next game or two.

The linebacker corp seems to have performed well, except Malcom Rodriguez and Alex Anzalone both like to play fast and quickly reactive. It might be necessary to consider using Anthony Pittman and Chris Border to some extent to give the unit a varied look. I'm still a big Rodrigo fan, so I'm not trying to move far away from him. I also like Anzalone too, and hope that a simpler scheme orientation might be suggested.

Now on to the D-Line. What is going wrong? Alim McNeill and Isaiah Buggs seem to be holding the middle, but the edges aren't being set and it appears they're being overwhelmed. Obviously Aidan Hutchinson is a blue chip talent, but does he need more help? Charles Harris has had a few big plays, but is he holding the edge? Some answers need to be found out, but I'm inclined to keep with Harris. Should we perhaps add a fifth lineman more often? Could Rodrigo move to strong safety? Can Elliott man free safety? If so, then I'd like to see how well Demetrius Taylor of if Josh Paschal is available soon, he might alternate as the fifth lineman with Taylor. How does Brockers fit; is he an alternate for McNeill? Benito Jones maybe supplants Brockers though if he cannot hold the line.

Who is the D-Line coach? Is this working? Is he reaching the players?

The D-B coach is popular, but is he getting the job done?

I'd hold their feet to the fire and say the next game is very important to their careers with the Lions. Progress and improvement has to be made. What doe they have to say? What isn't working for them, and why?
