I don’t know about you all, but I have been looking forward to this game from the time I got home from the Thanksgiving game. Back on the road after a disappointing loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 12, the Detroit Lions are headed south to face off with the New Orleans Saints.
While talented, the Saints have been really inconsistent this year. Veteran quarterback Derek Carr’s statistical output doesn’t look bad from a macro view, but injuries to their skill positions have left the New Orleans’ offense slightly shorthanded.
Defensively, the Saints still have veteran leaders like defensive end Cam Jordan, linebacker Demario Davis, and safety Tyrann Mathieu. So while the Lions’ offense will have to be cognizant of where those players are at all times, the Saints’ defense is a unit that is susceptible to big plays if you can get things rolling offensively.
Today’s Question of the Day is:
Which Lion is poised for a big day against the Saints?
My Answer: I am going to go with the best rookie running back in football, Jahmyr Gibbs.
Over the last several weeks, it seems like Gibbs has turned a corner in terms of earning the coaching staff’s trust. As a result, he is seeing more snaps and is on the field on big downs.
I would love to see Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson get Gibbs going early. Despite some of the aforementioned starpower, the Saints are softer up the middle, and with a Lions’ offensive line that is hopefully at full strength—that could end up being an issue for New Orleans.
Accomplishing that and feeding the rock to fellow running back David Montgomery would go a long way in softening up the Saints’ defense—making it easier for quarterback Jared Goff to take shots as the game wears on.
