There are five games left in the 2023 Detroit Lions regular season. If they walk away winners of three of them, they’ll have their first divisional crown since 1991.
That journey continues on Sunday with a divisional matchup against the 4-8 Chicago Bears. On the surface, one my think it should be an easy contest for the 9-3 Lions, but anyone paying attention knows that this one won’t come easy for Detroit.
For one, Bears quarterback Justin Fields has been a handful to this franchise. Fields has rushed for over 100 yards in three straight contests against the Lions. And in the previous matchup, he nearly put the game away with a 29-yard scramble with seven minute left. If not for a conservative gameplan from Chicago and a couple of huge plays from the Lions offense, the Bears would already have a 1-0 lead in this rivalry this year.
But the fact of the matter is the Lions have been the more consistent team all season. While there have been defensive struggles, Detroit’s offense has been excellent all year, as evidenced by them ranking sixth in scoring (27.3 PPG) and sixth in DVOA.
With the Bears defense suddenly coming into form, will that be enough for Detroit to continue their march to the NFC North crown?

Until then, go Lions!
