Irvin’s elevation doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The veteran pass rusher tallied two pressures and a sack in his first Lions appearance two weeks ago. He’s been battling an ankle injury since, but he’s clearly healthy enough to play this week, and will hopefully give Detroit’s pass rush a little extra juice against Russell Wilson—who has been sacked more than all but three quarterbacks this year.
This is Irvin’s second elevation this season, meaning he’ll have just one more left before Detroit will need to sign him to the 53-man roster to play him a fourth time.
The elevation of Badgley is far more surprising. This move suggests the Lions may be making a change at kicker this week. Riley Patterson has made 15-of-17 field goals this season, but he’s only 1-of-2 from 50+ yards and has missed two extra points—including one last week against the Chicago Bears.
Badgley was the Lions kicker for most of the 2022 season, where he went 20-of-24 and was a perfect 33-of-33 on extra points.
The Lions chose not to elevate any offensive linemen this week, which is very significant. It likely means that both Taylor Decker (back) and Frank Ragnow (knee/back/toe) will play tonight, despite being listed as questionable. Detroit has kept at least eight active offensive linemen in each game this season—allowing them to have 48 active players—and that will only happen this week if both Decker and Ragnow are active.
