‘Sunday Night Football’ open thread: Packers at Vikings

The fate of these two NFC North foes will be determined on New Year’s Eve.

The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings are fighting for their playoff lives on a New Year’s Eve edition of “Sunday Night Football.”

The division rivals each sit at 7-8 and on the outside looking in at a Wild Card berth. A loss tonight would be season-ending, so expect a hard-fought and intense battle. The Packers had a mid-season resurgence, but back-to-back losses to the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers put a serious damper on their potential playoff push. A close win against the Carolina Panthers last week saved their season in the meantime, but they have a gauntlet still to come.

The Vikings, meanwhile, are facing a different type of adversity. After a four-interception outing by quarterback Nick Mullens, the Vikings are shaking up the depth chart yet again. With Kirk Cousins injured, the Vikings have had a carousel at quarterback. Josh Dobbs looked like the savior for a quick minute, but he has since been benched. Mullens got his shot, but also came up short. Now, in a must-win game, the Vikings will start fifth-round rookie Jaren Hall. Hall technically has one start (and win) under his belt, but he left the game in the first quarter with a concussion. This will be a true trial by fire for the rookie.

Which NFC North opponent will keep their playoff hopes alive?

Here’s how to watch tonight’s game:

Date: Sunday, December 31, 2023
Time: 8:20 p.m. ET
Location: U.S. Bank Stadium—Minneapolis, MN
