On Wednesday, the NFL Players Association announced their version of a 2023 All-Pro team. The only Detroit Lions player to make that team was special teamer Jalen Reeves-Maybin.
To be clear, this is not the traditional All-Pro team list, which is voted on by 50 members of the press and released by the Associated Press. This is a new tradition started by the NFLPA last season. Unlike the AP version, the NFLPA only has a first-team All-Pro.
There are a few interesting wrinkles to the NFLPA All-Pro list process. Only active players can vote, and they cannot vote for themselves or any of their teammates. Players could also only vote for positions they play and the positions they line up against. The goal is for a more objective and unbiased vote.
Reeves-Maybin is certainly worthy of the honors. The veteran special teamer leads all specialists with 13 tackles. He has also successfully converted two fake punts this year: one by running and another via a pass.
“It’s definitely good to be recognized,” Reeves-Maybin told a group of reporters.
