According to a survey of over 1,700 players conducted by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is the most popular coordinator in the NFL right now.
This survey was a new addition to the NFL report cards that gained a lot of traction when the NFLPA debuted them last offseason. This addition asked players to grade their own coordinators, with offensive players grading their offensive coordinator, defensive players grading their defensive coordinators, and special teams players grading their special teams coordinator.
So, in other words, no coordinator in football has the respect of his locker room more than Glenn, and that tracks based on everything we hear from his players. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson spoke to the respect Glenn commands on a week-to-week basis:
“The way his players respect him,” Johnson said in December. “He is very demanding, yet he has a gentle touch when it comes to being able to relate and get them to do—bring out the best in them.”
Glenn has been a head coaching candidate for the past two offseasons here in Detroit. Last year, he interviewed for the Cardinals job and twice for the Colts job. The reason the NFLPA released these results now is to help coordinators like Glenn get more attention during the upcoming coach hiring cycle.
“We hope it will help these really qualified leaders get the chance to move on in the next cycle and have a chance to become head coaches,” NFLPA president J.C. Tretter told ESPN.
While Ben Johnson did not place among the top five offensive coordinator grades, Lions’ Dave Fipp came in fourth among NFL special teams coordinators.
Here’s a look at the top-five of each category:
