The Detroit Lions have declared their inactives ahead of the Week 18 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Lions made several roster moves this week and entered Saturday with 51 players on their active roster, but they activated Alim McNeill and C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the 53-man roster, while also elevating FB Jason Cabinda and DL Tyson Alualu from the practice squad, bringing Detroit’s game-day roster total up to 55 players.
Because the Lions have eight offensive linemen active for Sunday’s game, they are eligible to expand their game-day roster from 47 to 48 players. Therefore, with 55 players on the game-day roster and 48 eligible to play, the Lions need to declare seven players inactive for today’s matchup.
- QB Hendon Hooker — designated as the team’s emergency quarterback
- WR Jameson Williams (ankle) — Ruled OUT on Friday
- TE Brock Wright (hip) — Ruled OUT on Friday
- DT John Cominsky
- DT Brodric Martin
- EDGE Charles Harris
- CB Steven Gilmore
Hooker will once again be the Lions emergency quarterback, meaning he will be inactive for today’s game unless both of Detroit’s other options at quarterback are lost due to injury. In that case, Hooker would be allowed to become active and could enter the game.
Williams and Wright were ruled out on Friday and are expected to be replaced by Donovan Peoples-Jones/Kalif Raymond and James Mitchell respectively.
The activation of Alim McNeill and the elevation of Alualu overloads the Lions defensive line positions and is likely the catalyst for Cominsky, Harris, and Martin being inactive in this game. Cominsky is not dealing with an injury per the injury report, so it’s unclear why the Lions would not have a player who was giving them starter-level snaps out. It’s possible the Lions feel they have enough of an interior presence and prefer to go with more athletes on the edge. It’s also possible he is getting a veteran rest day.
The return of C.J. Gardner-Johnson from injured reserve gives the Lions 11 defensive backs in this game, which in turn is why Gilmore is inactive.
