The Patriots' director of pro scouting has emerged as one of four candidates for the Lions' GM job. Here is a look at his background.

When looking to rebuild a franchise, one doesn't have to look further than Foxborough to find inspiration. The New England Patriots have been the exact definition of a dynasty since Bill Belichick joined the team in 2000. Injuries, suspensions, controversies; nothing outside of the New York Giants seem to be able to derail the Patriots train.

Which leads us to the Detroit Lions' general manager candidate, Bob Quinn. Quinn joined the Patriots in the same year as Belichick and has slowly risen in the ranks since. Here's a look at his career.

His resume:

Coming into New England, Quinn had no NFL experience. Having just graduated from the University of Connecticut, Quinn served his time as a graduate assistant for the Huskies for the following two years while he earned his master's degree in sports management. That was all it took for Quinn to make the jump to the big leagues.

As to be expected, there isn't a lot of information out there about the inner-goings of the Patriots' front office and what role Quinn has played. That being said, here is the progression of Quinn's titles within the organization:

2000-2001: Player personnel assistant

2002-2003: Pro scout

2004-2007: Regional scout

2008: National scout

2009-2011: Assistant director of pro personnel

2012-2015: Director of pro scouting

Quinn obviously has a lot of experience in personnel decisions, on both the college and professional side of the job. Belichick confirmed as much earlier in the week when asked about Quinn:

Bill Belichick on Lions GM candidate Bob Quinn (director of pro personnel): "# of responsibilities - pro, college, advance. Real solid job."

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) January 5, 2016

And that's about as much information as you'll pull out of New England.

Career accolades:

There aren't any specific things to point to in Quinn's career, mostly because there just isn't any information out there. But Quinn has had an increasing role in the franchise that dominated the NFL from 2001 to today. That has to count for something.

Pros:

Unlike some of the other candidates we profiled, Quinn has experience scouting NFL and college players. Having his career blossom in New England, Quinn likely has a unique perspective of what the interior of an organization should look like. And because he's had multiple roles with the team, he's likely familiar with most -- if not all -- aspects of the Patriots' front office.

For what it's worth, Gil Brandt, former Vice President of player personnel, had nothing but great things to say in this Lynn Henning piece from The Detroit News:

"There’s nobody close to this guy as far as knowledge and ability to evaluate. He understands analytics, he understands the salary cap, and this guy, to me, is a superior evaluator of people and players."

Cons:

Like with all candidates that hail from the quiet halls for Foxborough, it's hard to pin down Quinn's specific role with the team and how much credit he deserves for the team's success. With so little information out there on Quinn, he's either their secret weapon or just a small cog in their expansive, overpowering machine. History seems to tell us that Patriot underlings don't succeed when cut from the Belichick umbilical cord.

Overall:

Quinn is a hard candidate to get excited about, if for no other reason than the lack of details on him. He's an extreme unknown, and when a person like that comes from New England, proceed with caution. Still, that doesn't mean he's unworthy of an interview. If the guy continues to receive an expanded role in the league's best front office, that probably means he's doing a good job. Still, Quinn will have to win the job with his interview, because his resume is just too clouded in Patriots dust to see anything clear.

White has been with the team for 19 years, holding various roles including scouting on both the pro and college side of the business and eventually becoming the director of pro personnel in 2000. Before being promoted to the interim general manager position back in November, White was the Vice President of Pro Personnel for Detroit.

Kevin has a background in salary cap management, which would prove valuable for the future of the Lions.

A fourth candidate has appeared in the running for the Lions' general manager position. Up until Wednesday, the Lions had three candidates consisting of interim GM Sheldon White, New England's Bob Quinn and Seattle's Trent Kirchner. Now, the Lions will also interview New York Giants assistant general manager Kevin Abrams. Per Jason La Canfora:

Giants exec Kevin Abrams will interview for Lions GM vacancy. Very sharp cookie. Ernie Accorsi, who is consulting for DET, knows him well

Kevin Abrams has served with the Giants for some time now, moving up through the ranks thanks to his work with salary cap analysis and branching out into personnel decisions. This background would prove useful to the Lions to clear up their current cap situation, bogged down as it is by contracts with its star players like Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford. Ernie Accorsi has probably put in a good word on him, being a consultant with the Lions for their general manager search, and his word will probably garner some favor.

Jeremy Reisman previously profiled Kevin Abrams on Pride Of Detroit, which you can read here.

The Lions are possible to interview more candidates, although many of the potential targets have decided to remain with their respective teams for the time being.

The Lions will be interviewing Trent Kirchner for their GM position. Here's a look at his resume.

It was reported Monday that Seattle Seahawks co-director of player personnel Trent Kirchner will be interviewing for the Detroit Lions general manager position. Kirchner has emerged as the third candidate for the position, along with New England Patriots director of pro scouting Bob Quinn and current interim general manager Sheldon White. Here's a deeper look at Kirchner's career:

His resume:

Kirchner started his NFL career right out of college with several internships for different NFL franchises, including the Redskins, Chiefs, Seahawks and even a Major League Baseball franchise in the Minnesota Twins.

After bouncing around, Kirchner found a home in Carolina, acting as pro scout for the Panthers from 2002-2009. As a pro scout, he was responsible for scouting the waiver wire and free agent lists, among other things.

In 2010, he jumped ship for the assistant director of pro personnel position with the Seattle Seahawks. After three years at the position, the assistant label was knocked off, and in 2015, he was named the co-director of player personnel.

Career accolades:

As a major scout for the Carolina Panthers, Kirchner was part of the reason for the big turnaround. During his time in Carolina, the Panthers went 71-57 and never won fewer than seven games in a season. The season after he left, Carolina went 2-14. Carolina also went to a Super Bowl during his reign.

Success followed him to Seattle, when he joined newly hired head coach Pete Carroll in 2010. Mostly concerned with the NFL side of the business for his first few year, Kirchner was influential in bringing in such free agents as Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, and also helped facilitate the trade for Marshawn Lynch. He has had only one draft as an employee on the player personnel side of the business.

Pros:

Kirchner not only has a lot of experience, but he has it in all the right places. Although most of his experience surrounds seeking free agents and professional rosters, he now has dipped his toe in the college scouting game with his new promotion to the player personnel department.

Additionally, success has followed Kirchner where ever he has gone, which may or may not be a coincidence. Either way, he has been to the Super Bowl with two different franchises and even has himself a ring.

Cons:

Kirchner doesn't have experience as a GM and his experience on the college side of scouting is limited. When plucking someone from successful franchises, one must be weary if the candidate they seek is responsible for the success or just along for the ride. With Kirchner, it's not clear.

Overall:

The fact that Kirchner has been in a successful organization is either extremely lucky or not a coincidence. However, he joined two franchises that were struggling and the teams almost immediately turned things around upon his arrival.

The New York Jets interviewed Kirchner for their general manager opening in 2015, so his consideration for the job is nothing new. Now that he has locked in an interview with the Lions, he may be looking to help turn around a third franchise in his young career.

Tobin current acts as the Cincinnati Bengals director of player personnel and has been with the Bengals organization since 1999.

The Lions have reportedly expressed interest in Tobin, but the feeling is not mutual:

Trent Kirchner has been with the Seattle Seahawks since 2010, beginning as an assistant director of player personnel and working his way up to director of pro personnel before his current title. While he has been with the organization, the Seahawks have turned into one of the true juggernauts of the league in the NFC, thanks to excellent scouting and building through the draft. Before his time with the Seahawks, he previously served in a scouting role for the Carolina Panthers and Washington.

Kirchner previously interviewed for the New York Jets general manager position last year.

If hired, Trent Kirchner would be a first time general manager, although he certainly has had enough experience under his belt to justify the role. This will most likely be the first of many interviews the Lions will hold in the coming days in hopes of landing the person most suited to run this ship.
Abrams is a much different candidate than the others we have profiled, but he could still be of good use for the Lions organization.

His resume:

Abrams started his NFL career with a bevy of internships: first in the corporate relations department in NFL Europe, then moving onto media relations with the Buffalo Bills. However, it was his internship with the NFL head office that truly led him on his career trajectory. There, he would help with labor issues, specifically salary cap and contract management. It was those nine months in 1999 where Abrams cut his teeth as a salary cap guru.

The Giants called his number shortly after, and Abrams served three years as the team's "Salary Cap Analyst." From there, he was promoted to the position he currently holds: assistant general manager. While Abrams really earns his keep as managing the money for the Giants, he has slowly worked his way into more personnel decisions, as well. Although Senior VP and General Manager Jerry Reese is considered the face of the Giants' roster management and draft preparation.

Career accolades:

Abrams managed to keep his job when the Giants transitioned general managers from Ernie Accorsi to Reese. While there may be concern that he wasn't promoted to the general manager position, the fact that he stayed with the team throughout the transition speaks to the job he has done.

The Giants always seem to have an overabundance of a cap space, and Abrams' cap expertise has a lot to do with that.

Pros:

The Lions have had some issues with the salary cap in the past, and their previous method of kicking contract hits down the road may have cost them a shot at retaining Ndamukong Suh last year. Abrams will have no problem managing the cap. If you're looking for someone who knows the ins and outs cap management, you won't find anyone more qualified than Abrams.

Cons:

Abrams' experience in the player personnel department is somewhat limited. Though according to the Giants' 2015 media guide, Abrams "also works with the College and Pro Personnel departments to evaluate players in preparation for the NFL Draft and free agency," it is pretty clear most draft preparations and personnel decisions are made by Jerry Reese.

Overall:

This isn't the home run candidate that many Lions fans are hoping for, but Abrams is absolutely the best option when it comes to contract negotiations and cap management. If the Lions were to go in this direction, they may be wise to consider hiring another manager for the personnel side of the business. Though the Lions haven't typically ran their front office in that manner, anything is possible with Martha Ford now at the helm.
