The rookie backup center is a likely candidate for the practice squad.

According to ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, the Detroit Lions have waived center Leo Koloamatangi.

Koloamatangi entered training camp as a potential sleeper. The undrafted rookie took second-string reps at center for most of training camp, but failed to improve and suddenly saw his playing time given away to players like Graham Glasgow and even Joe Dahl. He stood out in a good way in the preseason finale, but it was too little, too late.

The Hawaii graduate still has a chance to potentially develop as a backup center if the Lions decide to bring him back on the practice squad. After a promising preseason and camp, you have to think that is where Koloamatangi is headed.

The Detroit Lions are currently down to 67 players. With Armonty Bryant and Khyri Thornton expected to go on the suspended list, and Taylor Decker expected to stay on the PUP list, the Lions are just 11 cuts away from 53 players.

This weekend was rough on the Detroit Lions players on the bubble. Several went to social media to express their feelings.

It was an emotional weekend for the players of the National Football League. A handful of players beat the odds and completed their dreams of landing on an NFL roster. However, for nearly 700 player across the league, their pursuit of a football career hit a snag. The Detroit Lions alone cut ties 21 players over the weekend, but brought back seven of those to the team’s practice squad. The emotional roller coaster of that journey was caught on social media. Here’s a scattering of those moments.

Many hoped cornerback Alex Carter’s career would finally take off after disappointingly losing his rookie year to injury. Things didn’t work out that way, as the Lions ended up waiving the young player. However, Carter joined the team’s practice squad on Sunday and appears thankful for the opportunity.

Not many gave Incarnate Word’s Cole Wick much of a chance to make the final roster when the Lions signed the undrafted free agent tight end. But after a slew of injuries and some impressive play in the preseason, Wick beat the odds. He’s very excited:

Let’s take a moment to celebrate the career of Don Carey. For a player that has mostly contributed on special teams, he’s had an amazingly long career. Carey is one of four Lions on the current roster that have been with the team since 2011. Considering how short typical NFL careers are and how quickly teams overturn their roster, this is a true accomplishment. Carey doesn’t seem to take that for granted:

The new names on this list are cornerback Alex Carter, defensive back Charles Washington and newcomer tight end Brian Leonhardt. Carter and Washington don’t come as huge surprises, as the Lions are a bit thin at cornerback, and the two young corners have a lot of untapped potential.

However, the addition of Leonhardt is interesting. The Lions are in obvious need of tight end depth while Andrew Quarless serves a two-game suspension, Brandon Pettigrew remains on the PUP list and Eric Ebron’s injury status remains up in the air.

Leonhard was waived from the Minnesota Vikings last Tuesday. As an undrafted rookie in 2013, Leonhardt played two years with the Oakland Raiders, but only appeared in 12 games. There he caught six catches for 35 yards and a touchdown. Since then, he’s jumped around from the 49ers and Vikings in 2015. Because Leonhardt has an acquired season, he also fits under the special exemption on the practice squad, meaning the Lions have filled three of those four spots on the practice squad.

The Lions now have eight of their 10 positions filled on the practice squad. Follow along with all of the practice squad updates here.

The Lions continue to build their practice squad.

After Dwayne Washington showed immense progress throughout the preseason, it made George Winn’s spot on the roster expendable. But the Detroit Lions aren’t done with the running back yet. According to Justin Rogers, Winn will return to the Lions as part of the team’s practice squad.

Winn will fill one of the four practice squad spots designated for players with one or two acquired season in the NFL. Along with TJ Jones, the Lions have already filled two of those four spots.

Winn has been with the Lions since 2014, appearing in 19 games and tallying 9 special teams tackles along the way. Winn hasn’t been much of a runner in Detroit. In his two years, he only has 23 carries for a meager 74 yards. However, if the Lions need special teams help, they can now call up their hometown back off the practice squad.

In addition to Winn, the Lions have added wide receiver Jace Billingsley to the practice squad per Dave Birkett. Billingsley, a fan favorite here, had an outstanding preseason. He showed his skills both as a receiver and as a punt and kick returner.

Brandon Thomas has also been added to the practice squad according to Adam Caplan. The Lions added the young offensive lineman via a trade with the 49ers that sent wide receiver Jeremy Kerley to San Francisco. Thomas brings potential after an injury-riddled past derailed his career with the 49ers.

The highly popular Lions backup quarterback has returned to the team’s practice squad.

Jake Rudock did just about everything he possibly could as a sixth-round rookie to make the final 53-man roster. However, the Detroit Lions decided to waive the former Wolverine quarterback in an effort to trim their roster, much to the dismay of many fans who believed Rudock should have either been the team’s third quarterback or displaced Dan Orlovsky as the backup.

However, Rudock is now back with the team. The quarterback cleared waivers on Sunday afternoon and the Lions are signing him back to the practice squad. He will now be allowed to practice and workout with the team throughout the 2016 season, but will not be on the roster during game day.

Rudock joins TJ Jones, who will also join the practice squad according to Justin Rogers. The Lions have eight more position left on the practice squad, while players like Jace Billingsley and Jay Lee remain eligible to return.

The Detroit Lions have added a linebacker while only losing one player to waivers.

The noon claim deadline for players placed on the waiver wire this weekend has passed, and reports are now rolling in for which players have been claimed and which have cleared. Justin Rogers is reporting that TJ Jones has cleared waiver and should return to the practice squad once the Lions can make that decision (at 1 p.m.). However, the Lions also have apparently brought in a new player to the roster.

According to Pro Football Talk, the Detroit Lions have claimed former Jaguars linebacker Thurston Armbrister. Armbrister was undrafted in 2015 and played 16 games for the team his rookie year, tallying 15 tackles in three starts.

In addition to gaining Armbrister, the Lions lost the opportunity to bring Caraun Reid back to the practice squad, as the Chargers claimed him according to Pro Football Talk. Reid was eligible to return via the new practice squad rules, but he never made it that far.

The good news for Detroit is Reid was the only player to be claimed on waivers, according to Justin Rogers. That means players like receivers Jay Lee, Jace Billingsley and quarterback Jake Rudock could all be added to the practice squad.

Teams are notified of which players went unclaimed through waivers at Noon on Sunday and can start building their practice squad an hour later at 1 p.m. ET.

There is a lot of anticipation building for several Lions players that did not make the cut. Jake Rudock, Jace Billingsley and Jay Lee all made very strong cases for a roster spot in the preseason finale against the Bills, but at this point, it remains unclear if they will clear waivers.
Here’s a look at what the Detroit Lions depth chart looks like.

With the Detroit Lions establishing their 53-man roster on Saturday, the team that we’ll see for the 2016 season is starting to take form. It’s still likely the Lions will tinker with the bottom of their roster. The Lions are still expected to put Jon Bostic on injured reserve, and they will also get their shot at waived players from other teams at noon on Sunday. That being said, we still have a pretty good idea of where most of the roster will stand in 2016. So without further ado, here’s a look at our projected depth chart.
