Observations:

Riley Reiff being healthy brought normalcy back to the offensive line situation. Instead of Cornelius Lucas, it was Corey Robinson who filled in on certain packages and special teams.

The running back tandem of Dwayne Washington and Theo Riddick saw a pretty even split in snaps, but were used completely differently. On Washington’s 24 snaps, he had 13 carries for an abysmal 6 yards. Riddick, on the other hand, was not only the more "productive" runner—four carries for 13 yards—but was very effective in the passing game, catching eight passes for 70 yards on 10 targets.

Golden Tate saw an ever-so-slight bump in percentage of snaps (82 percent) in comparison to Week 9 against Minnesota (80 percent), while Marvin Jones saw a decline in participation, dropping from 94 percent to 89 percent.

Observations:

Kerry Hyder had the most snaps of any player along the defensive line, including the defensive ends. Ezekiel Ansah, who was questionable heading into this game against Jacksonville, played in 61 percent of snaps on Sunday, and had one of his better games in terms of applying pressure.

On only 36 total snaps—and only 12 on defense—Miles Killebrew had what may have been his most productive game, totaling five tackles. He made a key stop on third down late in the game, meeting Julius Thomas before the sticks and forcing a Jacksonville punt.

Sunday was the return of Darius Slay, who played on nearly every defensive snap (98 percent), but it was also the debut of Johnthan Banks, who played 21 snaps on defense. This relegated Johnson Bademosi, who filled in for the injured Slay in Week 9 against Minnesota, to strictly special teams duty, logging 23 snaps.

Muse’s western-themed rock anthem perfectly fits the Lions’ ugly, but hopeful win.

Last week, we introduced our Spotify playlist for the season, which features a Song of the Game chosen for all previous 10 weeks of the season. Because we had so much fun writing that article and because music feeds the soul, we’re going to make this a weekly column between myself, Chris Lemieux and Ryan Mathews. This week, I’m up, and I have the unenviable duty to pick a song that describes that ugly game. Here is my choice:

Lions-Jaguars Song of the Game: “Knights of Cydonia” by Muse

This game was an ugly battle between two ugly teams that resulted in a lot of men lost. What better song than the western rock ballad “Knights of Cydonia” to encapsulate the madness?

The song starts off on an extremely pessimistic note:

And how can we win
When fools can be kings?

The Lions seemed destined to lose this game from the get go. First, Anquan Boldin fumbles the ball, but gets bailed out by an inconclusive replay. Then Andre Roberts fumbles for real and just like that the 2-7 Jaguars are beating the NFC North leaders. Jim Caldwell has a head coaching job. Donald Trump is president. How can we win when fools can be kings?

But the song treads on. The rhythm follows that of a galloping horse through the arid desert. And the Lions weathered the dusty storm through three quarters of play.

But the entire song is just a crescendo leading to the final quarter. That’s when the Matthew Stafford guitar solo kicks in (starting at 4:13) and all faces in the general vicinity are melted off. Stafford completed his final nine passes of the game for 126 yards and two scoring drives. The Jaguars were left standing in the dusty wasteland, shocked, destroyed and utterly dead.

No one’s going to take us alive
The time has come to make things right
You and I must fight for our rights
You and I must fight to survive

The Lions are going to have to fight tooth and nail for their first division crown in 23 years. And they’re going to fight like hell.

Here’s a look at our ongoing playlist for 2016:

It was a role reversal for the Lions in Week 11 against the Jaguars.

Last week, the kids were on fall break. I hope the Detroit Lions enjoyed their time away from the classroom, because I’ve got a big fat red marker and I’m not afraid to use it after Detroit’s shaky performance—albeit, in a win—against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Without further ado, let’s get to some grades.

Quarterback: B-

Matthew Stafford was the opposite of good through three quarters. It’s been awhile since I’ve said that, so I’ve forgotten the exact word for it...b...b...bad? True he wasn’t helped out by a poor performance and lackluster efforts from his receivers—more on both of those later—but his inaccuracies cost the team early.

That being said, Stafford rebounded with a near-perfect fourth quarter. That isn’t an exaggeration; he was nearly perfect:

For as mediocre as Matthew Stafford was all game, he was 9-10 for 126 yards in the fourth quarter. #Clutch
— Pride Of Detroit (@PrideOfDetroit) November 20, 2016

You can’t discount the first three quarters when giving an overall grade, but that fourth quarter was more Stafford Magic.

Running backs: C-

How do the Lions running backs avoid a failing grade after combining for 19 yards on 17 carries? Theo Riddick catching eight passes for 70 yards is a good start.

The Lions had nothing resembling a rushing attack all game. Their longest run was seven yards. Dwayne Washington averaged a half a yard per rush. Heck, even “Wheels” Stafford couldn’t manage a single rushing yard. But it wasn’t entirely their fault. Rushing lanes were few and far between, and that is hugely disappointing against a poor Jaguars run defense.

Wide receivers: D

Once again, the Lions receivers took third billing behind the running backs and tight ends in the passing game. Golden Tate and Marvin Jones combined for just four catches on six targets for 42 yards and a fumble. Andre Roberts outgained that total with his single 44-yard reception.

Lions receivers are having a tough time getting open and Stafford is beginning to not even look their way. Granted the Lions have been playing some tough pass defenses as of late—Jacksonville included—but Stafford is going to need some help from his receivers if the offense hopes to remain afloat.

Tight ends: B

Eric Ebron was one of the heroes for the game, but it’s worth noting he went the first three quarters with just one catch for two yards to his name. But his fourth quarter featured a huge 61-yard catch on third down, a short 7-yard grab and a 1-yard rushing touchdown. It wasn’t a huge day for Ebron, but it featured two huge plays.

Offensive line: F

It’s hard to give this unit anything other than an F after Sunday’s performance. Stafford was sacked three times, more than the previous two games combined. Running backs were being met in the backfield. No lineman was innocent from guilt in this game. Just about every player had at least one blunder and at one point it got so bad that Larry Warford was replaced by Laken Tomlinson.

Defensive line: C+

Ezekiel Ansah finally showed up and provided some much needed pressure. Though the Lions failed to tally a sack during the game, Blake Bortles was anything but comfortable in the pocket all game. However, no one else on the front four provided as much consistent pressure as Ansah.

The run defense remains problematic for the defensive line. Every now and then, they’ll break out a big tackle for loss, but more often than not, there’s a solid running lane up the middle of this defense.

All thing considered, however, this was an above average performance for the defensive line.

Linebackers: F

The Lions’ best linebacker right now is Tahir Whitehead and he remains a huge liability in the passing game. Several times Whitehead was out of position and it cost the Lions a third down stop on at least two different occasions.

Outside of Whitehead, Josh Bynes was quickly pulled from the game in favor of rookie Antwione Williams. Williams was okay, finishing with the most tackles among linebackers, but he didn’t really move the needle much. The Lions knew they had trouble with their linebackers, so they started to play Miles Killebrew more in a linebacker-ish role.

Secondary: B+

Jaguars wide receivers combined for just eight catches for 79 yards. That’s not too devastating of a total for the defensive backs, even if two of those catches were touchdowns. As always, it was running backs and tight ends who tore up the middle of the field, while the secondary remained helpless.

On top of a fairly solid day from the cornerbacks, Lions safeties came away with two interceptions on the day, including a huge pick-six from Rafael Bush.

Special teams: B

It was a boom-or-bust day for special teams. Andre Roberts busted with an inexcusable muffed punt that cost the Lions three points, but quickly boomed with a huge punt return touchdown.

Sam Martin remained excellent, averaging 48.5 yards per punt and pinning three of six within the Jaguars 20. But Matt Prater had an extra point blocked that could have proved costly.

Coaching: C

There wasn’t anything in particular that bothered me about the coaching this week, so I want to talk about an interesting conundrum at the end of the game.

With 22 second remaining, the Lions were up 4 and faced with the decision to attempt a 43-yard field goal, go for it on 4th and 6 or strangely punt the ball from the Jacksonville Jaguars 25-yard line. Conventional wisdom says kick the field goal, go up seven points and call it a day, but I want you to think outside the box for a moment.

I think a punt may actually be the best choice here. First off, a punt is much less likely to be blocked and/or returned for a touchdown. Second, you can pretty much guarantee with a punt that the Jaguars will start no closer than their own 20-yard line. A missed field goal would give Jacksonville the ball at the 33-yard line. Also, a punt eats up at least as much clock as a field goal, typically more. Finally, a punt eliminates any chance of a kickoff return score in the event of a made field goal.

The only bad thing that can happen with a punt is a poor snap or blocked kick, both pretty rare outcomes. The very, very, very highly likely result is the Jaguars starting within their own 20 yard-line with 15 seconds to go, still needing a touchdown to win.

Obviously, I don’t view this as a huge mistake. Win probabilities for the Jaguars were so low at this point that this decision would have made very little difference in altering Jacksonville’s chances, but I like thinking about these sort of things.

After another close win, how do you feel about the Lions?

The Detroit Lions are 6-4 and still in first place of the NFC North. However, they didn’t make it easy on themselves. For only the second time this season, the Lions turned the ball over twice, but thankfully they had three takeaways of their own to counteract the damage.

When all was said and done, the Lions won a game by one score in the fashion they always seem to do: losing late in the game, they amount a comeback and hold on the by the skin of their teeth.

But like every Monday, we must take the time to look inward and see how we feel about this team right now. So today’s Question of the Day is:

Do you feel better, worse or the same about the Detroit Lions after their 26-19 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars?

My answer: A little worse. This isn’t because I expected the Lions to blow out the Jaguars. Quite the opposite, actually. If the Lions hadn’t kicked that last field goal, my 23-20 prediction would have been just a single point off.

Instead, I’m a bit disheartened on how they lost. The Jaguars had one of the worst rushing defenses in the league heading into Week 11 (28th in DVOA), and the Lions rushed for less than a yard per carry. I thought the offensive line took a huge step back this week, and while many are praising the Lions defense, I wasn’t too inspired by their performance. This was one of the worst offenses in the league and they ran fairly well against Detroit (with the worst rushing attack by DVOA) and this was still an above average game for Blake Bortles despite the two interceptions. Individually, we saw good performances from Miles Killebrew and Ezekiel Ansah, but as a team, this defense is still very flawed.

Let’s put it this way, if the Lions weren’t bailed out by a special teams and defensive touchdown, they probably would have lost to a two-win team at home. That’s pretty scary for a team competing for a division down the stretch.

Your turn.

Bob Quinn’s first draft class has been a phenomenal one both in comparison to previous draft classes and in general, and several of them helped lead the Lions to a win against the Jaguars.

For the first time in 2016, we haven’t had to hold our breaths for the entirety of the fourth quarter. Sure, the team was down at the beginning, as they have been in every game this season, but it never truly felt out of hand. Even as the offense struggled to move the ball, things were quieter than we’ve become accustomed to. Bob Quinn’s draft class has had its share of struggles and triumphs and we got an important game from several of them in both directions.

The rookie fourth-round pick out of Southern Utah was expected to be a project and the Lions have been, smartly, cautious in his development. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars, we finally got to see what it may look like when he’s unleashed and playing to his potential. Tied for the team lead in tackles with five, it wasn’t just that he was making tackles but making them when it was important. Seeing a safety who can come up big in important moments is encouraging. Killebrew has elite size and top tier athleticism for his position, but also a fiery, contagious attitude that will make him an exciting player to watch in the coming years if he continues to develop as he has.

Stock Down: Graham Glasgow, OG

Picked before Miles Killebrew was Graham Glasgow out of Michigan. The third-round rookie struggled mightily against the Jaguars interior defenders all game and was so routinely over-matched that I feared a benching. He wasn’t getting any help from Taylor Decker or Travis Swanson, who also struggled, but in manned up situations I saw a rookie playing like a rookie and it didn’t improve as the game wore on. The Jags took up residence in his head and his ability to block in any capacity in the run game was next to nil by the time the game hit its final minutes. Glasgow has played well for a rookie in recent weeks since becoming the starter, but this is a game he won’t be looking back on fondly.

It wasn’t a completely clean game for Williams, particularly in coverage where he got turned around on more than one occasion. Like Killebrew, however, nobody was expecting Williams to be playing in even a marginal capacity at this point of the season, and while he’s struggled at times, he hasn’t looked out of place. A small school prospect out of Georgia Southern, Williams was only expected to be a special teamer with DeAndre Levy, Tahir Whitehead, Kyle Van Noy, Jon Bostic and Josh Bynes ahead of him. Three were injured and Van Noy was traded, leaving Williams as a starter by default. I won’t go so far as to call him good, but a game like this one from a rookie who was expected to be sixth on the depth chart is a very good place to start.

How much of a surprise has Travis Swanson been this season? Embattled to start the season and most thought he was going to lose his job sooner than later. He’s played lights out, at or above a Pro Bowl level through Week 10. Week 11, on the other hand, we saw a throwback Travis Swanson from 2015. It wasn’t pretty, and I’m sure he’s not Matthew Stafford’s favorite person right now. It’s refreshing that it’s a blip on the radar, games like this, but you want those blips to not occur at all.

Yeah, I’m giving a shout out to Carey with a big write up today. Don Carey has been playing at an all-pro level on special teams this season, and is probably the best special teams player on a team that has Matt Prater and Sam Martin on it. And Johnson Bademosi. Nevermind the routine plays he makes that others can’t seem to do consistently, like leading the way on Andre Roberts’ punt return, or closing on returners so quickly that they have to fair catch despite otherwise open grass in front of them. That is child’s play for Carey. No, you have to see a guy taking down a returner with one hand while being tackled by a blocker to see how good Don Carey is. Carey left late with an injury, so we’ll wait word on that, but he was fantastic against the Jaguars.

Coaches

Jim Caldwell, HC, Stock Down

The Detroit Lions have played ten games this season. In all ten of them, they have trailed in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars are a pitiful team, one of the worst in the NFL. Jim Caldwell left the door open for them to win right until the very end. The play calling on offense was atrocious and wasn’t reigned in until the final minutes of the first half and fourth quarter respectively.

Jim Bob Cooter, OC, Stock Down

Cooter’s play calling in this one was terrible. It is probably his worst game, maybe second worst after Tennessee. There was no creativity in the passing game, no commitment or variance in the running game. Players had to work way harder than they should have against defenders they shouldn’t have had trouble against in the first place.

Teryl Austin, DC, Stock Up

This was a great game for Teryl Austin’s defense. Not only did they add some takeaways, but the actual scheme was paying dividends at times. Austin has struggled to put players in the position to make a play this season, but we saw several instances where he did just that. He made excellent use of Miles Killebrew in this game both in the box and as a pass rusher. This is something I hope we see more of as the season draws to a close.

Joe Marciano, ST, Stock Up

What a game from Marciano’s group. The kicking game was on point as always, aside from a block (I’ll get to that), but it was the coverage units that really had me going. In almost every instance, Don Carey and company were in place where they needed to be and the Jags had nowhere to go with the ball. Likewise, the return game was set up well and the blockers were there when they needed to be to lead the way. There was a blocked extra point, but on rewatching it I’m not sure it could have been played much better than it was. Just an excellent play from the Jags to get a hand on the ball, not an instance of a player failing to complete their assignment. Later, when rookie Jalen Ramsey came over the long snapper, it looked like they set him up to get a penalty, giving him a free jump and timing it right so that the team could basically get a free shot at points and the possibility of a penalty if it was missed.

After another thrilling Lions victory, it’s time to hear the best calls from the game. Sports on the radio is full of joy and energy, and when Dan Miller is making the call, it’s always an auditory treat.

Let’s start with the Lions first touchdown, which came by way of special teams; Andre Roberts returned this punt to the house:

Next up, Rafael Bush picked off Blake Bortles and took it back for the second Lions touchdown, giving Detroit a 16-9 lead:

The Lions were trading blows with the Jaguars, but it was Eric Ebron who made the game. After a 61-yard dash down the sideline, Ebron got to put it to bed himself with an end-around play for the third Lions touchdown:

After Prater’s field goal to extend the lead, the Jaguars had about 20 seconds to play with. Although Blake Bortles heaved it as hard as he could, Tavon Wilson Sr. found it in the end and iced the game for Detroit’s finest:

Thoughts on the Lions Week 11 win.

The Detroit Lions won again. I don't know how, but it happened. Let's take a quick break and do this early today.

Doesn't it feel so good? The Lions went out and won their fifth game out of the last six and held onto their first place position in the NFC North. As always, I have thoughts on the game. Here are those thoughts.

Detroit Lions: The Tim Tebow of the NFL

Make no mistake about it, this is not a good football team. But dammit, they just know how to win. It's just such a weird season for this Lions team. Only six weeks ago we were all talking about who the Lions would take in the first round and which Patriots assistant or random Bostonian would come coach the Lions in 2017. Now the Lions are in first place. Weird is the only way to describe it. That and this...

Matthew Stafford is incredible

Yes, I say that about a guy that threw zero touchdowns on Sunday. When the Lions need him to show up and make a play, he's always there. His work on the Lions' final two drives are the reason they won this game. At this point I'm starting to think that Matthew likes to be down in the fourth quarter. That's when he turns on his killer instinct and rolls. Can you believe this is the same guy sports talk hosts from a certain radio station wanted to trade to Houston for three first-round picks?

Can we trade the run game? is that a thing?

The Lions ran for 21 yards on Sunday. 21!! 18 of those yards were in the second half. That means the Lions had just three yards in the first half. Three!!!.

The Lions are averaging 1.1 yards per play. And they're winning!

— Kyle Meinke (@kmeinke) November 20, 2016

That was the end of the first half. At the end of the game, the Lions had rushed for those 14 yards on 21 carries. Therefore ending the game with a staggering 0.7 yards per carry. It's looking like the Lions will once again not rank over 17th in rushing yet again. I miss you Ameer.

Rafael is cool, but rude

No, I'm the rude one. Once again I have to apologize to Rafael for spending the summer insulting him on the radio or in print. I was wrong. Bush was great addition and he made two giant plays today that contributed to the win. He had the pick-six, obviously, but a huge tackle on third down of the Jags' ensuing drive can't go unnoticed. Good job, Rafael.

Killebrew comes on strong

Where did this Miles Killebrew come from? He was an early favorite for most Lions fans after he was taken in fourth round in April. But we haven't seen much from him since the season started. On Sunday he had five tackles. Three of them came on third down and forced punts. This is exactly what the Lions need from him. Just imagine if he can be the safety/linebacker hybrid they want him to be. That's called a weapon, my friends.

Cut/re-sign Andre Roberts

Is there a player on this team that takes you on more of an emotional roller coaster ride than Andre Roberts? First he can't figure out how to down the ball in the end zone for a month. Then he leads all return men in 10+ yard punt returns. Then on Sunday he muffs a fair catch and gives the ball to Jacksonville. Then he runs a punt back for a touchdown. Then he let's a recoverable punt trail back 15 yards, then follows that up with a big 44-yard reception. I don't know what to do about this guy anymore. Be normal, Andre!

So why not just run that play more?

HIGHLIGHT: Stafford finds @Riddick6 for 20-yard gain

: https://t.co/LHWAsCLMfh pic.twitter.com/hEuZzTrOMK

So we've all seen Riddick run this play before. If you don't want to watch the video, here's how it works. Riddick angles out about five yards and always gets the linebacker to bite. Then he angles in over the middle and Stafford hits him. You've probably used this play on Madden before because it always works. Much like Madden, this always works in real life too. Why the Lions don't run this with Riddick two to three times a game will always escape me.

Ebron

How about that tenth overall pick that your crazy uncle has been complaining about on Lions Facebook groups since his name rolled off the tongue pf Roger Goodell? The kid just makes it happen sometimes. This was one of those times. The Lions needed to get something going on offense. Look no further than Eric Ebron, who on the same drive, took a 61-yard pass into the red zone. Then he finished up the drive with a rushing touchdown: The Lions' only offensive touchdown of the game. I think it's safe to say the kid can play. Give him some respect.

So, do we still fire Caldwell?

One last thing this week. Is Jim Caldwell's seat still hot? You can make an argument that the Lions are never safe and are always in danger of losing. But then that argument would be bludgeoned to death in an alley with a push broom when you consider the fact that they haven't lost. And the fact that this team keeps making winning adjustments has to come back on Caldwell and give him some credit. I thought for sure that he was gone even if they made the playoffs. Now I just don't know. Guys, I think I might almost trust the guy. Almost. But I just don't know.

Which Lions player gets the game ball after another nail-biting victory?

It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t pretty. But you didn’t really expect either of those things to happen this week, did you? The Detroit Lions took down the Jaguars 26-19. Let’s take a look at the best performers from Sunday.

Here are the Game Ball standings after eight weeks:

17 - Matthew Stafford
6 - Theo Riddick
5 - Sam Martin
5 - Marvin Jones
3 - Andre Roberts
3 - Darius Slay
3 - Eric Ebron
3- Golden Tate
3 - Matt Prater
2 - Kerry Hyder
1 - Devin Taylor
1 - Ameer Abdullah
1 - Rafael Bush
1 - Johnson Bademosi

Rafael Bush

Bush had the play of the game with an impressive pick-six. Nevin Lawson deserves a lot of credit on the play for causing the high deflection on the pass, but Bush’s interception return was a thing of beauty. Bush also added four tackles to his day, including a huge open field tackle to force a fourth down.

Andre Roberts

Roberts had a huge blunder early in the game after muffing a punt, but boy did he make up for it. He added his second punt return touchdown of the season later in the half and had huge reception that broke the Lions offense out of its first half slump (even though Golden Tate would later fumble in the drive).

Miles Killebrew

The Lions have struggled with their linebackers all year, but they may have finally found a solution to their problems. Killebrew was in the game a lot in the safety/hybrid position and made a few huge plays on third down. He finished the day with five tackles.

Eric Ebron

Ebron was a mirage for the entire first half, but on the drive in which the Lions would score their only touchdown, he was the go-to guy. First Ebron pulled in a 61-yard grab on a big third down play from Matthew Stafford. Then he RAN it in from the 1-yard line.

Ezekiel Ansah

The Lions defense had themselves one of their better games of the season, and Ansah’s play was a big part of that. Though he only had four tackles on the game, he was constantly getting pressure on Blake Bortles.
