The left side of this offensive line could be really good, really soon.

The Detroit Lions offensive line has been their key to success as of late. Over the last few weeks, Matthew Stafford has had more time in the pocket—and with it, he has been an assassin.

The narrative surrounding the Lions is that with Taylor Decker and Corey Robinson back on the roster, things will almost certainly improve down the stretch. While that’s likely true, the Lions are already getting a big boost from one of their players that has been there all year.

Graham Glasgow has been playing his best professional football out of the bye week. Pro Football Focus’ Brett Whitefield explained in his weekly press release to the media after the Browns game:

Graham Glasgow's solid play extends for yet another week as he put up a 77.7 game grade and was the Lions highest graded offensive lineman. He was near perfect in pass protection not allowing a single pressure on 32 pass block snaps. Glasgow has completely turned around a poor season and now ranks in the top-20 among guards on the season with a grade of 76.2.

But numbers are just numbers. Let’s crack open the tape and see what this transformation into a top-20 guard looks like.

Pass blocking

As mentioned above, the Lions’ offense lives and dies with pass protection. According to PFF, Glasgow was perfect in this aspect of the game and the film agrees.

The Browns, per usual, are sending extra men to pass rush. The pre-snap alignment has Glasgow at a huge disadvantage, having to make up several feet to even get in position to block Cleveland’s nose tackle, Trevon Coley.

Lucky for Detroit, Glasgow is an extremely athletic player:

Note those impressive speed times. Glasgow is in the 80th percentile among guards in his 40-times, his 3-cone and just outside for his shuttle time. So how does that translate on game day? Check it out:

Glasgow’s lateral movement is extremely quick and gets him in the proper position. If you want to see what it looks like when you don’t do your job properly, check out Brian Mihalik right next to him. Granted, Mihalik had a much tougher assignment against the No. 1 pick in the draft, but still, Glasgow’s quickness is a huge asset to this offensive line.

But Glasgow also has some strength. Several times in this game, he had to deal with Myles Garret on his own, and that man has quite the bullrush. Glasgow knew how to absorb and neutralize him:

Glasgow stops Garrett in his tracks, and although he loses him inside for a second, that actually opens up a nice escape lane for Matthew Stafford, which he uses to find Dwayne Washington for the biggest third down pickup of the game. The Lions would score the go-ahead touchdown just three plays later.

Run blocking

In our first example, we noted how the Lions put Glasgow in challenging situations, trusting that his quickness would compensate. The Lions did the same in the running game, and Glasgow speed once again prevailed.

Glasgow blasts out of his stance and somehow gets outside leverage on the defensive tackle, with a little help from Travis Swanson. This time, Mihalik does the same, and with a minor hold from Darren Fells, Ameer Abdullah has the edge and turns it into 19 yards.

But I’ve saved the best for last. Detroit has been desperate for red zone blocking all year. The running game has been awful once Detroit gets inside their opponent’s 10-yard line, but Glasgow provided a huge glimmer of hope on Sunday. This play is an absolute masterpiece from Glasgow:

In less than four seconds, Glasgow eliminates three different defenders from the play.

If Detroit can consistently get this kind of play from Glasgow, along with a Taylor Decker without the rust, the left side of this offensive line has the potential to be as strong as the right. And that should get Lions fans extremely excited for the future.

Big Play Slay is living up to his name this year.

Let’s check out the most notable—both good and bad—performances from the Detroit Lions Week 10 matchup against the Cleveland Browns, as calculated by our friends at Pro Football Focus.

(Note: All PFF grades and rankings are up to date through Sunday prior to the Sunday and Monday night games. Grades are subject to change upon PFF’s weekly re-grading process.)

Matthew Stafford domination

For the third straight week, Stafford looked surgical against his opponent. Though an early interception dropped his overall grade a bit (just 76.8), Stafford put up some incredible numbers, especially against the blitz.

From PFF’s Refocused article:

The Browns chose to blitz Stafford often and he was able to make them pay, going 9-of-12 for 156 yards and two touchdowns

Stafford now has an overall grade of 80.6 on the season, which is good enough for 11th in the league. You may remember that just two weeks ago, Stafford was 20th.

Rough day for Jarrad Davis

I pointed this out in the PODcast and mentioned it on Twitter on Monday, but this was game for the Lions’ first-round pick to forget.

Jarrad Davis struggled a lot in this game. This play is a perfect example why:

1) Akeem Spence his holding double team to create that A-gap for Davis to shoot.
2) Davis leaves gap assignment to follow RB
3) Leaves wide open cutback lane. pic.twitter.com/uspIoIayza
— Pride of Detroit (@PrideOfDetroit) November 13, 2017

According to PFF, Davis graded out with an overall score of just 28.2—59th among linebackers as of Sunday night. He missed a couple tackles and gave up 75 passing yards while in coverage.

Rookies are always going to have some early struggles, and there’s no reason to panic with Davis yet. But he’s now had a couple really iffy performances as of late.

Darius Slay nearing top-5 status

Darius Slay was oddly targeted 11 times on Sunday and he responded with an impressive game grade of 86.8—the second highest among all NFL cornerback in Week 10 (prior to the SNF and MNF games). Browns quarterbacks had just a 25.6 passer rating when targeting him, and although he allowed six catches, they totaled for just 42 yards.

Elsewhere in the secondary, Tavon Wilson (82.1) and Quandre Diggs (79.0) put up their usual, consistently good grades. However, Glover Quin had a season-low PFF grade (45.9) thanks to two missed tackles in the running game. Still, Quin ranks third overall among safeties with a 90.1 season grade.

Anthony Zettel is the new Ansah

With Ziggy out of the lineup on Sunday, some (see: me) were expecting a big performance from Anthony Zettel. And he delivered:

Another big performance from Anthony Zettel yesterday pic.twitter.com/7HiwUlwErp
— Pro Football Focus (@PFF) November 13, 2017

It wasn’t an outstanding game from Zettle, but his 80.8 grade is a good indicator of how he managed to step up and play at an above-average level while taking a bigger role with the defense. He also played in a career-high 59 snaps against the Browns.

Taylor Decker didn’t fix everything

While I don’t have an individual grade for Taylor Decker’s first performance of 2017, he sadly didn’t magically fix everything on the offensive line. Decker was swapping playing time with Brian Mihalik, while offensive tackle Corey Robinson (fresh of the IR list) took over for the injured T.J. Lang at right guard.

The results weren’t all that great, especially when it came to protecting Stafford. According to PFF, the team had a pass blocking efficiency of just 70.2, which was third worst among teams that had played in Week 10 before “Sunday Night Football.”

There’s still a lot to do, but the jury is still out on Decker and his influence over the rest of the offensive line.

The Lions didn’t have a ton of red zone opportunities vs. the Browns, but they made the most of them.

A couple weeks ago, we took a deeper dive into the Detroit Lions’ red zone performance because there’s no question it cost them the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. We discovered that while the Lions did mix up the play calling a bit, they were still extremely unsuccessful running the ball, especially in short-yardage situations.

Some of those same problems popped up the following week against the Green Bay Packers. On one series, the Lions came up short on three straight rushing attempts from inside the 2-yard line.

So how did the Lions perform on Sunday against the Browns? Detroit made just two trips to red zone in Week 10. Here’s what happened.

All Touchdowns

Detroit scored four offensive touchdowns on the day, however two of those were scored from outside the red zone—a 40-yard screen pass to Golden Tate, and a 29-yard strike to Eric Ebron.

The Lions only entered the red zone twice and finished both drives with touchdowns: one rushing, one passing.

Play efficiency

The Lions only ran a total of six plays in the red zone, but almost all of them were successful. Here’s a look at each play:

First-and-10: Incomplete pass (throw away)

Second-and-10: Abdullah run for 2 yards

Third-and-8: Matthew Stafford scrambles for 9 yards

First-and-goal: Abdullah run for 8 yards, TD

First-and-10: Pass to Abdullah for 3 yards

Second-and-7: Pass to Riddick for 8 yards, TD

That’s six plays for 21 yards, which averages 3.5 yards per play. While that number isn’t particularly eye-popping, it’s efficient enough when you’re dealing with a shortened field.

Perhaps most importantly, the Lions didn’t have any negative plays in the red zone like they had in the previous two weeks. Against the Steelers, only three of 17 red zone plays gained more than a single yard. Last week in Lambeau, the Lions offense gained one yard or fewer on seven of 13 red zone plays. This week, that number was just one in six plays.

Play calling

The Lions called just two running plays in the red zone, but those two plays combined for 10 yards and a touchdown, which is much more impressive than week’s past. Also of note, only Ameer Abdullah took rushing attempts in the red zone this week.

When the Lions dropped back to pass on the other four red zone snaps, Matthew Stafford was pretty efficient. He went 2-for-3 for 11 yards, 1 TD and nine rushing yards.

Goal line/Short-yardage situations

Where the Lions have really struggled in the past is running the ball in goal line situations. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see any of that this week, as the closest the Lions got to the goal line was the 7-yard line. This explains why Dwayne Washington didn’t even receive a single carry on Sunday.

The Lions weren’t really tested in any other short-yardage situation against the Browns. Detroit faced 11 third downs on offense, but only three of those were with three or fewer yards to go. In all three of those situations, the Lions opted to pass. Stafford went 2-2 on those plays for 34 yards, 1 touchdown, and one sack (2 of 3 conversions).

Overall

The sample size was incredibly small here, so it’s hard to really judge if Jim Bob Cooter has this team’s short-yardage offense fixed. Still, two red zone trips turning into 14 points is exactly where you want to be, even if the Browns have the worst statistical red zone defense in the league.

The Lions played poorly but got the W and I’m like, ‘Yeah, whatever.’

I hate games like this. When you go up against an 0-8 team, you’re in a no-win scenario. If you blow them out, you “did what you should have done.” If you struggle even a little bit, it’s evidence that your team is horrible and you should feel bad forever.

Obviously the Detroit Lions do have some serious problems, and those reared their ugly head in a game that was poorly played against the Cleveland Browns for nearly three full quarters. But the Lions won, and ultimately that’s what matters. As fans, we can’t lose sight of the fact that we watch these games in the hopes that our team wins. Detroit won on Sunday and everything else is whatever.

Lions-Browns Song of the Game: “United States of Whatever” by Liam Lynch

I don’t know how this song came to be or how it managed to actually breed some modicum of success (it reached the top 10 in the UK and Australia and earned Lynch an appearance on “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.”), but I absolutely love it for this week’s Song of the Game.

I knew after this game that there would be a lot of hot takes and distress among Lions fans, and some of it is warranted. But this was just one of those frustrating games in which the Lions ultimately got the job done, even if it took a little incompetence from their opponent to get there.

But Jeremy, the Lions gave up over 200 rushing yards against a Browns offense that entered Week 10 as one of the worst in the league.

Yeah, whatever.

The Lions offense actually was pretty impressive against a respectable Browns defense. Matthew Stafford continues his amazing streak of play after the bye week. Kenny Golladay and Taylor Decker looked good in their highly-anticipated returns.

But then a beat writer comes up to me and is all like, “But Eric Ebron was used to troll Lions fans and almost lost them the game.”

And I’m like, “Yeah, whatever.”

Detroit also got another boost from their special teams play, as Jamal Agnew continues his Pro Bowl-like season:

The Lions eased some of their newer faces back into the lineup against the Browns.

Here’s a look at the Detroit Lions’ snap counts from their Week 10 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Offense:

Observations:

Ameer Abdullah saw a small uptick in snaps after getting benched because of the fumbles against the Packers. Dwayne Washington saw almost no playing time, but did make a clutch third down conversion.

Golden Tate continues to see a limited amount of playing time, likely due to his shoulder injury. However, his 69 percent participation rate was significantly higher than last week’s 51 percent.

Kenny Golladay was also a player who made the most out of his playing time. In just 11 snaps, he saw three targets and caught two balls for 65 yards.

Taylor Decker was someone the Lions were clearly keeping on snap count. Bouncing in and out of the lineup, Decker is clearly picking up where he left off last year. Detroit also smartly kept him out of special teams plays while they had a surplus of offensive lineman for the first time in awhile.

Observations:

First off, congratulations to Glover Quin and Jarrad Davis for playing all 81(!!!) defensive snaps. Just goes to show you how long the defense was on the field, considering the offense played in just 52 snaps. Rest them bodies, Quin and Davis.

This week in surprising boost in playing time: Khyri Thornton. Last week, he only played in 31 percent of snaps. This week, he was up to 37. Thornton returned from suspension back in Week 8 and only has four tackles in three games.

Unsurprisingly, Paul Worrilow saw a big chunk of playing time with the Browns going run-heavy and Jalen Reeves-Maybin out with an injury.

For the first time since Week 4, DJ Hayden saw more playing time than his counterpart, Nevin Lawson. Lawson has struggled in the past few weeks and saw his lowest percentage of playing time against the Browns.

It was a very mixed bag performance for the Lions against the Browns.

The Detroit Lions nearly had a letdown game in Week 10 against the Cleveland Browns, but in the end, clearly the better team prevailed. Here is our report card for the Lions’ Week 10 performance.

Quarterback: A-

After a slow start, Matthew Stafford was masterful against a good Browns secondary. Stafford’s passes had touch and accuracy, and, for the most part, he was making the right reads.

His final stat line of 249 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception was modest, but Stafford was constantly facing blitzes, and considering he only threw the ball 26 times, that’s actually a pretty impressive output.

Running backs: A-

Lions backs carried the ball just 15 times, but Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick combined for 87 yards (5.8 YPC) and a touchdown. Of those 15 carries, four went for 10 yards or more, and although there were still too many negative plays in the running game, this was still a fantastic performance against the best run defense in the league.

Considering Detroit was without one of their best offensive linemen in T.J. Lang, this was an extremely difficult assignment for the Lions’ running backs, and they rose to the occasion. If Detroit had the ball more often in this game (they only ran 49 offensive plays), this very well could have been the game where they finally had a 100-yard rusher.

Wide receivers: B-

Golden Tate continued his phenomenal season with a six catches on seven targets for 97 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Golladay made a huge catch early in the game. But Marvin Jones Jr. showed, once again, that he struggles when matched up against some of the better cornerbacks in this league. TJ Jones was also a non-factor, dropping a tough pass that would’ve extended a drive early in the game.

Tight ends: B

Eric Ebron wasn’t a huge part of the game plan on Sunday, seeing just three targets all game. However, he absolutely made the most of both of his catches. He beat his defender by two steps on his impressive 29-yard touchdown catch that essentially put the game away. He also added a 10-yard reception to help get the Lions into a third-and-manageable earlier in the game.

Neither Ebron nor Darren Fells stuck out in a good or bad way as blockers, so this was an above-average performance from the unit.

Offensive line: C+

This was a really tough game to grade for the offensive line. Taylor Decker made his triumphant return and looked like the upgrade we expected of him, even if he was on and off the field. He wasn’t perfect, but you can already see how much better this unit can be with him in the lineup.

As mentioned before, the Lions running game was surprisingly explosive in this game, and most of those long runs were extremely well-blocked. However, when the Browns loaded the box, this unit was overwhelmed and allowed way too many negative plays, including four sacks on the day. The Corey Robinson-at-guard experiment was mostly a bummer, but Detroit was a little desperate without T.J. Lang. Hopefully he makes a speedy recovery this week.

Defensive line: D

It seems unfair to give the Lions defensive line a D grade after they finished with three sacks—including Cornelius Washington’s first and second sacks of the season... finally! But for the majority of this game, the Lions defensive line failed to contain DeShone Kizer and were just manhandled in the running game. Any time you give up over 200 yards on the ground at more than 6.0 per carry, something went drastically wrong on the defensive front.

Still, they deserve a little credit for dominating when Cody Kessler came back into the game. Those three sacks on seven plays when Kessler came in the game were game-changing.

Linebackers: F

If running backs have a clear lane through the line, it’s up for the linebackers to clean up the mess, and Detroit completely failed to do that on Sunday. You know it’s a bad day when Tavon Wilson, Quandre Diggs, Darius Slay and Glover Quin all had more tackles than Jarrad Davis.

Things were only worse when Tahir Whitehead or Davis were targeted in the passing game. Davis continues to look a bit lost out there in pass coverage, although he did get his hand on one ball on Sunday.

Overall, this defense looked a lot like it did in 2016, which was defined by horrible linebacker play. This was a step in the wrong direction for this unit.

Secondary: B+

Darius Slay:

DeShone Kizer targeted Darius Slay's coverage today 11 times. He yielded a passer rating of just 25.6 on those throws. Slay's game grade of 86.8 is the second highest for a CB so far this week.
— Brett Whitefield (@PFF_Brett) November 13, 2017

Tavon Wilson had seven tackles, including a sack for the second straight game. Quandre Diggs was also a tackling machine, coming up with a season-high six on the day.

Even Nevin Lawson, who struggled most of the game, came up with one of the most important plays on the day. After missing a tackle, Lawson reached out, stripped the ball, and had the wherewithal to get up and run for the scoop-and-score.

Special Teams: A

As always, the Lions’ kick and punt coverage teams were essentially perfect, allowing a total of just 46 return yards on a combined four punts and kicks.

But the big performance here was by Jamal Agnew, who gave the Lions that final push they needed in the fourth quarter with two big punt returns.

Jamal Agnew is currently averaging 18.3 yards per punt return.

No one else in the NFL is averaging over 14.
— Pride of Detroit (@PrideOfDetroit) November 13, 2017

I’d give Detroit an A+ here, but a costly block in the back penalty on Nevin Lawson erased a huge play from Agnew.

Coaching: C-

Obviously, Jim Caldwell’s early challenge of a fourth-down conversion was awful (though not as bad as the John Fox’s challenge this week), and Caldwell admitted as much after the game. Thankfully, it didn’t turn out to be costly in any way. However, losing a challenge in the first quarter like that could have definitely hurt the team had they needed to challenge two more plays in the game.

Defensively, whatever the gameplan was going into the game needs to be burned immediately. It seemed very clear that the way to beat this Browns offense was to stack the box and force DeShone Kizer to beat you. However, the Lions didn’t seem to have any interest in stopping the Browns’ running game and didn’t make any adjustments all game.

But for the second straight game, the heat is completely off Jim Bob Cooter. The Lions offense was not only efficient for the majority of the game, but they actually converted in the red zone this week. Detroit made two trips to the red zone against the Browns and converted both of them for touchdowns.

Who was the player of the game in Lions-Browns?

It was an ugly win, but the Detroit Lions will take the W however they can get it (but they will not eat the W).

There were plenty of things to worry about after Sunday’s game, but there were also several impressive individual performances from the Lions. Let’s look at the bet of those and give out the Week 10 Game Ball for the Detroit Lions.

But before we do that, here are the Game Ball standing after Week 9:

Matthew Stafford - 8
Glover Quin - 7
Darius Slay - 4
Matt Prater - 4
Ezekiel Ansah - 3
Anthony Zettel - 3
Jarrad Davis - 3
A’Shawn Robinson - 3
Jamal Agnew - 3
Marvin Jones Jr. - 2
Darren Fells - 2
Golden Tate - 2
Kenny Golladay - 2
Ameer Abdullah - 2

Now onto this week’s candidates.

Matthew Stafford

Stats: 17-26, 249 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 118.9 passer rating

After a slow start and a horrible interception, Matthew Stafford righted the ship and finished the game with some dimes. His downfield pass to Kenny Golladay and touchdown pass to Eric Ebron were perfectly placed balls and huge plays for an offense that had to carry the team on Sunday. Out of the bye week, here are Matthew Stafford’s collective stats in three games:

70-104 (67.3%), 1033 yards (9.9 Y/A), five touchdowns, one interception, 111.6 passer rating

Golden Tate

Stats: 6 catches, 97 yards, 1 TD

For the fourth straight game, Tate finished with at least six catches and 86 yards. On Sunday, you never would have guessed he was up against a pretty decent Browns secondary. As usual, Tate did most of his damage after the catch, gaining 73 of his 97 yards after the ball was in his hands, according to Pro Football Focus. His instincts for the end zone helped put the game away on a 40-yard touchdown play late in the fourth quarter.

Darius Slay

Stats: 5 tackles, 3 passes defended, 1 INT

Though this wasn’t Slay’s toughest assignment this year, he certainly played like the typical shutdown corner the Lions are used to having on that side of the field. Surprisingly, DeShone Kizer was completely unafraid of targeting Slay, and the lockdown corner often made him pay. According to PFF, Slay was targeted 11 times on Sunday, and allowed a passer rating of just 25.6 (six catches, 42 yards, 1 INT).

Jamal Agnew

Stats: 4 punt returns, 56 yards (14.0 average)

There may not be a player on the Lions roster who is more exciting with the ball in his hands than Jamal Agnew. Though his first big punt return was called back because of an unnecessary block in the back, Agnew followed it up with a 29-yard punt return that set Detroit up on Cleveland’s side of the field. Three plays later, the Lions scored a touchdown to take a two-score lead and put the game away.

Theo Riddick

Stats: 4 rushes, 35 yards; 3 catches, 12 yards, 1 TD

It was hard to decide between Riddick and Ameer Abdullah for this final spot, as both rushed well over their season YPC average. However, Riddick displayed his value both as a rusher and receiver in this game. Theo’s receiving touchdown helped the Lions head into the fourth quarter tied, but he’s been surprisingly efficient as runner this season.
