I found a new way, baby.

This playlist needs a cold, hard kick in the ass. I’m not trying to insult my coworkers’ selections for our 2022 Detroit Lions Songs of the Seasons—their choices properly matched the misery of the first two months of the year—but it’s time to turn things around.

Any good playlist has a banger of a song to raise the energy of the album to make sure the listener doesn’t get bored or complacent. What better time to start, than at the midway point of the 2022 season with the Lions on a two-game winning streak.

Two weeks ago, this team was 1-6 and the fanbase was in a familiar space—looking at the 2023 NFL Draft class with 10 games still left to be played. With the No. 1 pick, it was time—again—to have the quarterback conversation. It was a miserable place, and as someone who believes draft content should be a couple weeks—not six friggin months—long, I could already sense fatigue setting in.

Well I’m bored, I’m bored
C’mon, let’s get high”

But then the Packers game happened, and the Lions won in a way I’ve never seen. They picked off Aaron Rodgers not once, not twice, but three times. And most importantly, after the offense failed to put the game away and everyone in Ford Field was certain they were about to witness yet another Rodgers game-winning drive, they stood tall.

The Lions defense was damn near perfect in the fourth quarter. The Bears ran 17 plays in the final 15 minutes of the game, and only three plays gained more than 5 yards. The only first down they gained the entire quarter was on a defensive penalty, and it was followed by two sacks, an incomplete pass, and a 7-yard checkdown. Justin Fields was 2-for-6 for 13 yards, one interception, and two sacks. Counting in those two sacks, Fields had NEGATIVE TWO net passing yards in the fourth quarter.

This is not normal. This is not the Detroit Lions we have known for a very long time. They don’t win on defense. They don’t stop opposing quarterbacks. They give up fourth-and-17s. They lose on Hail Marys and 66-yard field goals.

But for the last two weeks, they’ve found a new way to win. I can’t say for sure it’s going to stick, but it’s starting to change my perception of the game. Maybe next time the Lions score a go-ahead touchdown with over two minutes left, my immediate thought won’t be, “Left too much time on the clock.”

Examining how the Detroit Lions 2022 rookie class performed in Week 10 of the regular season.

With the Detroit Lions 31-30 victory on the road against the Chicago Bears, they have now won two games in a row. Of course, this development is coming off the heels of a five-game losing streak, which culminated with the Lions letting go of secondary coach Aubrey Pleasant (who is now an offensive assistant with division rival Green Bay Packers), along with some shake-ups in the starting lineup. So far, it certainly looks like those changes are paying dividends.

Contrary to popular belief among some national media members, this Lions team was never really poised to make a lot of noise in 2022. I enjoyed the process of having them in town, but I really blame “Hard Knocks” for a lot of that undeserved hype surrounding the Lions.

They have made some upgrades on the offensive side of the ball since the arrival of coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, but with only two offseasons under their belts since tearing the roster down, there is still plenty to be done—particularly on the defense. With more money at their disposal in free agency and a stockpile of early picks in the 2023 NFL draft, we should see the Lions begin to allocate resources towards fixing what is, to put it politely, a unit that is lacking juice.

Still, despite the lack of aforementioned juice, this young defense stepped up to the plate against Chicago. Let’s take a look at how each member of the Lions’ 2022 draft class fared in their Week 10 victory against the Bears.

Aidan Hutchinson, DL

54 snaps (89% of total defensive snaps) — 1 special teams snap (8%)
PFF defensive grade: 62.7

In a game that was packed with big plays, Hutchinson left his mark on this game on a handful of occasions. With that said, he wasn’t perfect, but to be fair to him and the rest of the Lions’ defense—it’s tough to be perfect against a player like Fields.

On Fields’ first touchdown run, Hutchinson actually does a great job of defeating the block of rookie left tackle Braxton Jones. After Fields makes defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs’ miss, Hutchinson gets out of position by taking a bad pursuit angle. From there, Fields makes one more cut before finding nothing but green grass in front of him on his way to a score.

Here is another snap from early in the game when the Bears were having a lot of success on the ground. The offensive line and Fields are moving right, when the man in motion actually gets the ball on a sweep to the left. Luckily, it didn’t result in a big play, but with all of the pre-snap motion, and play-action going on in Chicago’s backfield—it isn’t a surprise that the Lions inexperienced front struggled to decipher what was really going on.

this is from early in the game, but he bites on all of the action moving right.
It took a while, but Hutchinson and the rest of the defense settled in a bit more as the game went on. Here is an example of him doing his usual thing against the run—crashing down the line, and making the play on the ball carrier.

Another excellent run stop, this time down near the goal line. This is really impressive when you consider Montgomery is one of those backs that seems to pride himself on being a physical, and punishing runner.

Here we have a rep from the third quarter where Hutchinson is able to hurry Fields, and force an incomplete pass. He gets his hands into right guard Michael Schofield before ripping through and chasing Fields out of the pocket.

On the final stop for the Lions, Hutchinson came up big again, this time making short work of right tackle Riley Reiff. Another nice combination of moves to get home. After starting the season being a little too reliant on his bull rush, Hutchinson is beginning to chain moves together more frequently and successfully.

Lastly, if you are looking for a thorough breakdown of cornerback Jeff Okudah’s interception for a touchdown, you can find it here. Jeremy does a terrific job of showing the role Hutchinson played in the turnover, as well as how other members of the front contributed.

Hutchinson finished his afternoon with eight total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and three quarterback hurries.

Jameson Williams, WR

DNP: On reserve/NFI while recovering from a knee injury suffered in January 2022

Josh Paschal, DL

Paschal’s day was cut short due to a knee injury, but not before he got a taste of what the rest of the defensive line would be dealing with. Here the rookie out of the University of Kentucky has Fields in his sights, only to come up with air. Something that seemed to happen over and over again during the Lions’ win over the Bears.

Prior to exiting the game, Paschal was integral on this sack by defensive end Julian Okwara. Once Okwara steps inside running back David Montgomery, you can see Fields’ first instinct is to escape towards his left. However, Paschal notices this, and steps back outside, freeing up his outside shoulder and getting into a contain position—where Fields can finally be brought down from behind by Okwara. One of those plays that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, but a very heady play that resulted in a teammate making the play. Sacks are an individual statistic, but more often than not, they don’t happen without teamwork. Especially against an escape artist like Chicago has under center.

After a monster game last week during the Lions’ win over the Green Bay Packers, Joseph tumbled back down to earth this week. And you know what? That is how things are going to be with this defense for a while. The talent is there for Joseph, and other young members of the unit, but it is difficult to be consistent in the NFL when you don’t have the requisite experience and repetitions. Just the nature of the beast in this league.

In this instance, Joseph appears to be the single high safety, with Chicago utilizing their heavy personnel package. For whatever reason, he appears to get preoccupied with the crosser in front of him, while also forgetting tight end Cole Kmet just ran by him.

Hard to really fault him here when everything that could have gone wrong with this run fit, went completely wrong. But as a safety and the last line of defense, Joseph has to break down here and make this stop. Instead, he overpursues Fields and is forced to hopelessly jump at his feet as he is sprinting by on his way to six points.

Despite the busted coverage and missed tackle, it wasn’t all bad for Joseph. This play is a great example of both Joseph’s range, as well as the physicality he has been showing off ever since being inserted into the starting lineup. The receiver held on to the ball, but still an impressive close and tackle nonetheless.

The coaching staff is still opting to bring Mitchell along gradually, but I have noticed they are beginning to trust his blocking prowess more and more by the week. Lately, when Detroit has been in short-yardage or goal-to-go situations, Mitchell has entered the game to provide more power at the tight end position.

In the passing game, Mitchell was targeted one time and finished the day with one reception for 4 yards. Coming off of a knee injury, I suspect this aspect of his game will come along a little more slowly, especially with the steep learning curve that tight ends have to endure during their transition from college to the NFL.

Amon-Ra St. Brown is officially back, while Aidan Hutchinson takes a big step in his game.

Week 10 was a milestone marker for the Detroit Lions in the Dan Campbell era. Not only was this Campbell’s first road victory during his tenure, but the Lions were finally able to stack a couple of wins in a row, creating their first winning streak under this regime. Oh, and the Lions picked up their first win over the Chicago Bears since Campbell took over, finally restoring order and balance to the franchise.

In all seriousness, the Lions have not only won two games in a row, they’ve won two games in a row decided by a narrow margin—and they’ve effectively ended both games by making big stops on defense. After Detroit’s loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 8, Campbell siphoned some wisdom from Bill Parcells when talking about the Lions record in close games.

“Bill Parcells just used to say, ‘The only way to win close games is win close games,’” remarked Campbell in the aftermath of Detroit’s four-point loss to the Dolphins. Since then, Detroit’s found a way to win close games in back-to-back weeks, against division opponents nonetheless, and the Lions have matched their win total from last year before Thanksgiving. Progress, everyone. Progress.

As we do every week for this Detroit Lions team, we have some data courtesy of Pro Football Focus that can help us better understand the football the Lions have played thus far—and how they’ll continue to play from here on out. Let’s take a closer look at the Lions by the numbers after their win over the Chicago Bears in Week 10.

In case you forgot, Amon-Ra St. Brown is a certified, top-tier receiver in the NFL by just about any measure. When he caught his seventh pass of the afternoon against the Bears, St. Brown entered the top-10 in NFL history for the most receptions through 25 career games. He’s tied for seventh in the NFL in yards after catch per reception (5.8) among wide receivers with at least 53 targets this season—last year, he finished tied for eighth in YAC/Rec (4.8). Despite injuries costing him almost two full games and Detroit already having their bye, St. Brown is tied for 19th in first downs among wideouts.

While St. Brown did tally an impressive 10 catches for 113 yards against Chicago, including eight first downs (tied for the Week 10 high amongst all pass-catchers), no stat is more impressive than St. Brown’s 4.10 yards per route run which led all pass-catchers with at least 12 targets in Week 10. He outpaced Justin Jefferson, Stefon Diggs, CeeDee Lamb, the whole bunch when it came to making the most out of his pass patterns.

50.0

Ever since the Lions nabbed EDGE defender Julian Okwara in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, fans have been excited about his potential as a pass rusher—and they saw some of that last season when he tallied 5.0 sacks and 21 hurries over 173 pass rush snaps.

On Sunday, despite suffering a knee injury that limited his snap count, Okwara’s relentlessness as a pass rusher showed up not once...

Okwara played 23 snaps against the Bears, but on just six pass-rushing snaps, he tallied three quarterback pressures, including the 2.0 sacks from above for a 50.0 pass-rushing productivity mark which is a formula that combines sacks, hits, and hurries relative to how many times they rush the passer. As the Lions get healthy along the edge, using Okwara strategically as a guy strictly to get after the passer could be.

15.4

Let’s get one thing out of the way: Aidan Hutchinson has been far from perfect, but that’s the way of life for a rookie in the NFL. His success and productivity can be uneven at times throughout the game, but it’s never for a lack of revving that engine of his that never stops. But when the motor and technique align, you get a play like he made on the goal line to stop David Montgomery from crossing for six.

We see you Aidan #RatedRookie pic.twitter.com/0mzDSRZTvW
— The Draft Network (@TheDraftNetwork) November 13, 2022

Something undeniable about Hutchinson’s game so far through his rookie season is his ability to just keep going snap after snap. Only ten EDGE defenders in the NFL have played at least 191 run defense snaps and Hutchinson (217) is one of them. Of those ten defenders, Hutchinson ranks sixth in defensive stops with 14 total on the season. You’d like to see him play with more efficiency, of course, but the hope is that develops as he hones his technique and Detroit’s defense—especially the interior of their line—gets a little more talent around him.

His game against the Bears saw him take a big step in the right direction, though. Hutchinson registered a 15.4 STOP%—the percentage of a player’s run defense snaps where he was responsible for a stop. That number ranked third among all defenders in Week 10 who played at least 24 run defense snaps—Hutchinson actually finished with the best STOP% among EDGE defenders.

158.3

With two interceptions, three total passes defended and ten tackles last week against the Packers, Kerby Joseph made headlines when he earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors just nine weeks into his NFL career. One week later against the Bears, Joseph allowed a perfect 158.3 passer rating in coverage with PFF charging the rookie with four catches allowed on four targets, 85 yards, and two touchdowns including this 50-yard pitch and catch to tight end Cole Kmet.

Sunday’s game was a reminder that Joseph is still learning the intricacies of the safety position after flipping back and forth between wide receiver and safety at Illinois. Since injuries have thrust him into a starting position, plays like this are bound to happen as he learns on the fly, so it’ll be interesting to see how Joseph responds against the New York Giants after experiencing the highest of highs and lowest of lows.

While not the prettiest of games, both Jared Goff and Detroit Lions defenders came up big for a fourth-quarter comeback vs. the Chicago Bears.

The Detroit Lions are winners of back-to-back games for the first time in the Dan Campbell era. It wasn’t the prettiest of wins against the Chicago Bears—and that is reflected in this week’s report card—but the most important mark of all is a tally in the win position.

Here are my positional grades for the Detroit Lions 31-30 victory over the Chicago Bears.

Quarterback: A-

We’re going to go ahead and pretend that interception that never happened ever happened. Because other than that play—that, again, does not count—Jared Goff played a phenomenal game against the Bears.

One of the biggest criticism levied against Goff is that he has not been able to elevate a poor set of receivers around him, and in the fourth quarter against the Bears, that’s exactly what he did. In the final 15 minutes, Goff went 6-of-8 for 98 yards, with four of those completions going to Kalif Raymond, Justin Jackson, and Tom Kennedy—three guys who would not start on most teams.

He was also pretty darn good in the first half, completing 10-of-14 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Goff managed the pocket well for most of the game and made some narrow-window throws. He was the Lions offense on a day in which the run game struggled and pass protection was unreliable.

He gets dropped a half-grade for a pretty bad third quarter, but otherwise, I thought this was a good day from Goff.

Running backs: C-

Jamaal Williams and D’Andre Swift found the end zone, but it was otherwise ineffective days from the Lions backfield. Swift does not look like his old self, as he appears extra cautious in avoiding contact and was caught a couple times running too much east/west and not enough north/south.

To be fair to this group, the Bears didn’t make things easy, especially for Williams:

Per @NextGenStats, Jamaal Williams faced an 8+ man box on 50% of his carries vs. the Bears. Only Nick Chubb and… (gulp) Khalil Herbert saw a higher percentage in Week 10.
— Jeremy Reisman (@DetroitOnLion) November 14, 2022

Unlike previous weeks, the Lions running backs were not targeted much in the pass game. However, Williams did have a really nice blitz pickup on one of Detroit’s big pass plays in the first half.

Tight ends: C-

Another tight end this week, as Brock Wright did a great job selling the block on this key fourth-and-goal conversion:

Wright call on 4th down❗️#DETvsCHI | FOX pic.twitter.com/p1lVN3vswB
— Detroit Lions (@Lions) November 13, 2022

But that was just about it from the tight end group in the receiving game. Rookie James Mitchell added just one catch for 4 yards. Shane Zylstra did have a critical drop on third down, though Goff’s pass didn’t do him any favors.

On first viewing, I don’t have much of an opinion on the tight ends’ blocking.

Wide receivers: B

Amon-Ra St. Brown has damn near unstoppable in Chicago, catching 10 of 11 targets for the fourth 100-yard game of his young career.

It was a pretty quiet day for the rest of the receiving corps... until the most important drive of the game. Tom Kennedy made his one and only catch—a 44-yard explosive play—on Detroit’s game-winning drive, and Kalif Raymond added 20 of his own a few plays before that.

Offensive line: D

Disappointing day from the offensive line. The Chicago Bears defensive line isn’t good, and they were allowing 4.9 yards per carry for the season. Detroit failed to dominate the trenches, averaging just 3.1 yards per carry on the ground, and they had another frustrating failed third-and-1 conversion.

Pass protection was acceptable, but there Bears did seem to confuse the front five on a few occasions, creating a free rusher at Goff.

Defensive line: C

I have mixed feelings about the defensive line. On one hand, the Lions were absolutely gashed by runs up the middle. While the focus was mostly on Justin Fields’ day, Khalil Herbert and David Montgomery were dominant, as well. They combined for 19 carries and 94 yards (4.95 YPC).

Early in the game, the Lions struggled to contain Fields, but they finished extremely strong on that front. Designed runs were a different story (and I think LBs and DBs were more to blame there), but when it came to keeping Fields within the pocket and not letting him escape, I think the Lions actually did a phenomenal job. If Isaiah Buggs makes that tackle on the Fields short TD run, they may have been perfect on the day.

Aidan Hutchinson, in particular, played Fields phenomenally. He kept him corralled for most the game, and he forced Fields to hesitate on a screen play that would eventually turn into a pick-six.

Linebackers: C+

Jarrad Davis got a somewhat surprising elevation from the practice squad and immediately had a nice pass breakup in the first quarter. Alex Anzalone pitched in with 10 tackles and a pass defended (that may or may not have been pass interference) and even forced a fumble.

Secondary: C

A lot of good and a lot of bad from this unit. Kerby Joseph had a game to forget, blowing coverage on the first Cole Kmet touchdown, and he may have very well been responsible for the missed assignment on the 50-yard touchdown, too:

Cole Kmet wide via Lions blown coverage, touchdown dots!@NextGenStats pic.twitter.com/yGkV9NYh6p
— Seth Walder (@SethWalder) November 13, 2022

But the Lions were largely not beaten by Fields’ arm, and Jeff Okudah had a fantastic day in coverage. Sure, the pick-six was largely a gift, but credit to him for actually making the play.

Additionally, the Lions secondary was absolutely in lockdown mode on the Bears’ final drive. Fields took a couple coverage sacks to lose the game.

Special teams: D

Jack Fox was uncharacteristically horrible, shanking a pair of boots in this game, and the Lions allowed a 50-yard kick return. Detroit responded with a nice 39-yard kick return of their own, but it didn’t really end up mattering with essentially no time left in the first half (more on that later).

Coaching: C+

Give the Lions coaching staff credit for creating a defensive gameplan that may not have been perfect, but came up big in big moments.

Offensively speaking, I still have some issues. It’s clear the Bears were selling out to stop the run, trying to force Goff to beat them. But here’s the thing: Goff was beating them in the first half. And what does Dan Campbell tell the FOX sideline reporter at halftime? We need to run the ball. Detroit comes out in the third quarter and runs three times en route to a quick three and out, and before you know it, Detroit is down 14.

Additionally, I was annoyed with how Campbell failed to utilize his timeouts at the end of the first half. As a reminder, here was the scenario: The Bears had the ball first-and-10 at the Lions’ 18-yard line at the two-minute warning. That’s plenty of time for Chicago to score, but it’s also plenty of time to carve out another offensive possession for Detroit. The Lions had all three timeouts, and Chicago would only end up running five more plays. That means four out of those five plays could’ve ended with a stopped clock (3 timeouts and the eventual TD), giving Detroit plenty of time to try and re-take the lead before halftime. Instead, they let the clock run, and a huge kickoff return went to waste. Detroit’s offense was rolling up until this point in the game, and it is the head coach’s job to maximize the amount of opportunities for their team to score.

Overall, though, this is nitpicky. Detroit made critical plays in the fourth quarter, and that started with critical play calls. Kudos to Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn for helping close out the game.

Vote for which Detroit Lions player you think is most deserving of the Week 10 player of the game award.

The Detroit Lions have back-to-back wins against NFC North rivals, have registered their first road win of the Dan Campbell era, and are now 3-6 on the season after beating the Chicago Bears 31-30 in Week 10.

Let’s take a look at some of the top players from this win and award this week’s game ball.

Amon-Ra St. Brown

Stat line: 10 receptions, 119 yards, 1 rush, 2 yards, 7 first-down conversions

St. Brown was nearly uncoverable from the moment he stepped on the field in Chicago. His first seven receptions not only all went for first downs, but with 139 career receptions, he is now ranked among the top 10 receivers in NFL history in receptions within their first 25 games.

Over the final 10 minutes of the fourth quarter, with the Lions trailing seven, Hutchinson once again stepped up his game. Down 24-17, the Bears are trying to milk the clock, and Hutchinson stays home and makes a stop on first down, allowing just 2 yards. A holding call sets up second and long and the Bears call a tight end screen. Hutchinson feels the easy release from the tight end, and instead of rushing at Justin Fields, he intelligently drops with the tight end, forcing a more challenging throw, which was picked off by Jeff Okudah—more on him in a minute.

The teams traded scores and with the Lions up a point, the Bears had the ball with three minutes remaining. Fields rushed on first down and Hutchinson made the stop. The Bears looked a bit disjointed but got a penalty to keep the drive alive. Then, on second down, Hutchinson struck again—this time with a sack—swallowing up Fields.

Speaking of critical plays at critical moments, hello, Julian Okwara.

The Lions have a game plan to lean on Okwara’s athleticism to help account for Fields, but it took him some time before he was able to find his footing. On the first play of the game, Fields scrambled left, and Okwara failed to set the edge, allowing a quick 28-yard gain. Not long later, Okwara left the game with a knee injury and it looked like his day would unceremoniously come to an end.

Fortunately, he was able to return and registered a sack at the end of the first quarter. At the top of the second quarter, he collected a tackle for loss on an Equanimeous St. Brown, but from there on out, he was relatively quiet.

But like Okudah, when the Lions needed someone to close out the game, Okwara found his footing, and once he finally got his hands on the quarterback, he made sure to wrap up Fields for sack/turnover on downs.

He’s got great vision, and he’s shown the ability to break tackles and potentially have some explosive runs for us too.”

With the Lions down six points and two-and-a-half minutes to play, St. Brown's reception set Detroit up with a first-and-goal from the two-yard line. The play was simple: hand the ball off to Williams and run him straight up the gut behind Jonah Jackson (who buried his man) and Taylor Decker:

The Detroit Lions mounted a big fourth-quarter comeback, and the defense again made huge plays down the stretch to hold onto the lead.

Last week, the Detroit Lions got the one defensive stand they needed late in the game to hold off the upset over the Green Bay Packers. On Sunday, they had a similar opportunity against Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears. And even though Fields was giving the Lions trouble all day, the defense stood tall in the fourth quarter. Chicago punted twice, was pick-sixed once, and when the Bears needed a game-winning drive, the defense produced two sacks, spoiling Fields’ otherwise impressive day.

The Lions now have back-to-back wins for the first time in the Dan Campbell era and this was the team’s first road victory in two years. Here’s how it happened.

First quarter

The Bears offense took the field first, and Justin Fields immediately made his presence known with a 28-yard keeper after Julian Okwara got sucked in by the play-action. Chicago went runs on the first five plays of the drive, moving steadily down into the red zone. A holding penalty, and a nice Jarrad Davis (!!) pass breakup pushed the Bears back into a third-and-14, and Chicago ran a give-up draw up the middle and settled for a field goal. 3-0 Bears.

The Lions offense all went through Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Lions second-year receiver picked up a pair of third downs to start the opening drive. From there, the Lions started pounding Chicago on the ground with a 9-yard run by Justin Jackson followed by a 13-yard run from Jamaal Williams. But like Chicago, the Lions stalled in the red zone and kicked the chip-shot field goal on fourth-and-4. 3-3 tie.

Khalil Herbert kickstarted the Bears next drive with a kick return all the way to their own 49-yard line. However, another Chicago penalty put them behind the sticks, and a sack from Okwara set the Bears up third-and-14 at Detroit’s 44-yard line as the quarter came to an end.

Second quarter

Detroit got the stop with a nice pressure from John Cominsky and Okwara, and the Bears punted away for a touchback.

The Lions offense quickly got themselves into trouble with a batted down pass and a run for loss. However, Jared Goff found Kalif Raymond for a 22-yard gain. Detroit again found themselves behind the chains after an iffy offensive pass interference call on Trinity Benson, but Detroit quickly moved the chains again thanks to St. Brown. Goff then found St. Brown on back-to-back plays for 22 and 20 yards, setting Detroit up first-and-goal from the 10. An end-zone pass interference gave the Lions four shots at the end zone from 1-yard line, but Goff took a sack on first down, pushing them back to the 4. Detroit struggled, but eventually punched it in with a nice play-action fake to Brock Wright on fourth down. 10-3 Lions.

The Bears offense answered thanks to a couple nice plays from Fields. On the first, he escaped pressure on a third-and-5 and found Byron Pringle for the first down. Then, once down into the red zone, Fields somehow escaped pressure again on a broken play after Isaiah Buggs failed to bring him down. Fields scrambled into the end zone to tie the ballgame up with just 12 seconds left in the half. 10-10 tie.

Third quarter

Detroit opened the second half with three straight runs, but Jamaal Williams was stuffed on third-and-1 after several Bears thrashed into the backfield, giving the back no chance to convert.

Fields moved into Lions territory with a third-and-5 completion to a wide open Darnell Mooney. Chicago was able to pick up their own third-and-1 and a run to Dante Pettis, moving the team into the red zone. A few plays later, Fields found tight end Cole Kmet for the go-ahead touchdown with Kerby Joseph in coverage. 17-10 Bears.

The Lions next drive didn’t go much of anywhere. The complete drive was blown up when the Lions tried an end around to Kalif Raymond, but the Lions receiver didn’t appear to know the handoff exchange was coming, resulting in a fumble and 9-yard loss. They’d punt a play later back to Chicago.

Detroit continued to have no answers for Fields and the Bears offense. On a blown coverage, Fields found a wide open Kmet for a 50-yard touchdown. 24-10 Bears.

The Lions were gifted good field position thanks to kickoff out of bounds, but Detroit couldn’t take advantage. Goff took a bad sack on a second-down play, and followed it up by short-arming a pass to an open Shane Zylstra, who dropped the low pass. A miserable punt from Jack Fox ended a miserable quarter from the Lions.

Fourth quarter

The Lions defense gave a glimmer of hope to the team with a three-and-out thanks to a nice pass breakup from Alex Anzalone.

Goff scrambled for 10 yards on the first play of the opening drive and was hit while going out of bounds, drawing a penalty and a little skirmish between the two teams. Another penalty on the Bears moved Detroit into the red zone. Goff threw an interception intended for D’Andre Swift, but it was negated by another penalty to Chicago. On the ensuing play, Swift scored a touchdown on a beautifully-blocked play. 24-17 Bears.

Goff would get the ball back with 5:23 remaining on their own 9-yard line.
A collection of thoughts on the Detroit Lions’ huge comeback win over the Chicago Bears.

693 days ago the Detroit Lions beat the Bears in Chicago. Then they went 693 days without a road win until Sunday when the Lions won a 31-30 nailbiter against the same team they won their last road game against 693 days before. Did I get that 693 point across?

As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thoughts.

Aaron Glenn for mayor

The Lions defense has been really bad in 2022. But in the last two weeks when the Lions needed to get a stop to win a big game against a divisional opponent, his defense came through big. A couple of huge sacks on a quarterback that had ran all over them during the course of the game got it done. This could be spark that the Lions needed to get things turned around this season.

Jeff Okudah

What a season for Jeff Okudah. At one point in time, some were sure that Okudah was a bust. After suffering from injuries for his first two years in the league, Okudah has come back with a vengeance in 2022 and looks every bit like a player that was selected third overall.

A Sunday he grabbed the first pick-six of his career. It was a much needed moment for the Lions and it ultimately helped the Lions win the game. Sadly Justin Fields got his own vengeance on the next drive, but still, what moment for Okudah and again, the Lions won.

The Lions collapse in the third quarter again

I don’t even know how to explain what happens to this team in the second half each week. The Lions went into the half tied at 10-10 and by all accounts, looked good in all phases. Then this list of things happened in just the third quarter.

It just doesn’t make sense. I don’t know how the Lions fix it. But it’s the same thing that happens nearly every week. You start to think there’s some sort of other worldly thing happening here. Let me think about it. I might have an answer later in this article.

Feed the Sun God

Amon-Ra St. Brown has been a little off in the past few weeks as he was getting over an ankle injury. On Sunday he went right back to being the guy you know and love. St. Brown really unlocks the offense for this team, and you can see that he made Jared Goff comfortable out there. So comfortable that he connected with St. Brown six times in the first half alone. He didn't stop there though. St. Brown finished the day with 10 catches for 119 yards.

Hutch to the WWE

A long time ago, in the galaxy that we currently live in, Lions linebacker Chris Spielman made an appearance at Wrestlemania 10 and helped Lawrence Taylor beat Bam Bam Bigelow. Lions rookie Aidan Hutchinson showed on Sunday that he could be the next Lion to find himself in the squared circle. Let’s just book it now. When Wrestlemania comes back to Detroit, Hutchinson vs. Roman Reigns in the semi-main event. I’d continue to pay $9.99 for Peacock to watch that.

Tales of the Third Quarter

Okay, I got it. I know what happens to this team in the third quarter. Everyone gather around the campfire and I’ll tell you the tale.

It turns out aliens are real. They’ve turned the entryway to the locker room into a portal that sends the Lions team to the planet Narclar. They remained trapped there for the duration of the third quarter. That’s not all though. You see, they have skin suits that look like the Lions players and they strap them on to the dumbest aliens on the planet and then send through the portal to play the third quarter. That’s why Cole Kmet got that wide up 50-yard touchdown. Alien Kerby Joseph was too busy being mesmerized by the grass at Soldier Field. The aliens returned the Lions in the fourth quarter. They did do some experiments on them though. Also they spray rum on them so nobody will believe their story.

Justin Fields

I’ve been anti-Justin Fields for a while. Mainly because I always see people on Twitter talk about something amazing that he just did, and then I see that he finished the game with multiple turnovers and the Bears lost. His stat line just never seems to match the takes that surround him.

Sunday he showed me that he’s a good quarterback. His footwork is very impressive and he’s as slippery as they come. I’d still like to see more of him throwing the ball, but the throws he made on Sunday were pretty decent. I’m not to the point where I’m ready to crown him, but I will say that I was wrong. He’s good. There, I said it. He did throw that pick-six though. He also took two back-breaking sacks in a row.

What is happening here?
