The review of the Detroit Lions' game against the Buffalo Bills came back very positive, as expected.

Considering how dominant the Detroit Lions were last Thursday, this won't come as a huge surprise, but reviews were extremely positive for their game against the Buffalo Bills. Several Lions players stood out for their positive play in Pro Football Focus' review of the game, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Let's start with the secondary. Thanks in part to the awful quarterbacking the Bills had, Bill Bentley earned a +3.4 grade, Rashean Mathis scored a +2.4 and Darius Slay earned a mark of +1.3. Bentley was actually named the player of the game for his performance, which included an interception.

Moving to the defensive line, Devin Taylor again received praise for his play, and he actually received a +2.7 grade for the entire preseason. PFF has been very high on Taylor, and he should get a lot of playing time in the regular season as a member of the rotation at defensive end.

Flipping over to the offensive side of the ball, the Lions' quarterbacks not named Matthew Stafford received positive grades for their play against the Bills. Kellen Moore earned a +1.8, while Shaun Hill got a +1.7.

Head on over to PFF for more on Thursday's game, and check out their recap of the Lions' cuts while you're at it.

While the Detroit Lions' starting front five seems set, the battle for the final roster spots is on.

Thursday's game against the Buffalo Bills pretty much confirmed all of our suspicions on the offensive line. The Detroit Lions have pretty much settled on their front five: Riley Reiff, Rob Sims, Dominic Raiola, Larry Warford and Jason Fox. However, looking at how they used the offensive line for the rest of the game gave us a look into who may make the final cuts come Saturday.

To begin with, the Lions got an extensive look at LaAdrian Waddle at right tackle. Waddle held his own during the entire game and wasn't responsible for the only sack. He wasn't dominant, but he was definitely serviceable. Corey Hilliard doesn't appear to even be in the discussion at right tackle, as this was his second straight game getting no snaps at the position. However, Hilliard did play nearly half the game at left tackle. Both Waddle and Hilliard are likely to make the final roster, but it appears Hilliard is now the left tackle backup.

The guard position is a little less clear. Warford looks to have the starting job locked down, but the Lions clearly think he needs as much playing time as possible. I understand he's still a rookie, but it's not a good sign when your projected starting right guard is still playing in the fourth quarter of the last preseason game.

Jake Scott is still getting a lot of snaps at right guard, but isn't expected to win the starting job. Dylan Gandy is no longer a candidate for the starting right guard job, but he has shown his value as a backup center. On the left side, Rodney Austin and Leroy Harris have been battling for the backup spot. In this game, Harris got in the game first and got nearly half of the offensive snaps. While Austin still had over a third of the snaps at left guard, it appears he may have lost his grip on the backup role at left guard.

The Lions will likely only keep four guards. I think Scott is probably safe, due to his experience. But beyond that, the Lions will have to choose between Gandy, who provides additional value as a backup center, Austin, who has the most experience on the left side of the line, and Harris, who appears to be gaining ground on Austin and also has experience at center. I think Austin is the biggest longshot at this point, with no clear leader between Harris and Gandy.

Lions notes looks at various tidbits from Thursday's win over the Buffalo Bills.

Thursday's win over the Buffalo Bills gave the Detroit Lions a 3-1 record in the 2013 preseason and a 19-5 record in the preseason since 2008. Actually, the Lions haven't finished below .500 in the preseason since 2006. If only they played this well in games that actually counted.

The Lions' captains on Thursday night were Joique Bell, Matt Willis and Andre Fluellen.

Blake Clingan stepped in for Sam Martin as the Lions' punter on Thursday. Martin is dealing with an injury, but it's not believed to be serious enough for him to miss any time in the regular season.

Jon Morgan injured his shoulder on Thursday and Martavius Neloms hurt his left foot. Both players will likely be waived/injured on Saturday.

Don Carey suffered an injury of his own and was wearing a brace on his right wrist, according to Josh Katzenstein.
A look at the Detroit Lions who stood out for good reasons and those who stood out for bad reasons on Thursday night.

The Detroit Lions cruised to a 35-13 win in their preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills. Let's examine which Lions players emerged as winners and losers from Thursday's game.

Winners

QBs Shaun Hill and Kellen Moore - It was another good night for the Lions' backups at quarterback. Hill went 4 for 5 for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns, and he finished with a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3. Moore, meanwhile, went 10 for 18 for 78 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.

RBs Joique Bell, Theo Riddick and Steven Miller - Bell once again impressed, mainly thanks to a 23-yard touchdown run. He didn't even get touched on it, but he displayed good speed. Riddick also impressed by snagging a pair of touchdown passes from Moore, and he caught Jim Schwartz's attention.

Schwartz on Riddick: I thought he played a good game and he has had a good camp.

— Tom Leyden (@TomLeyden) August 30, 2013

As for Miller, he wasn't able to do a whole lot on the 6 returns he had, but he ran for 72 yards on 12 carries. If he doesn't make the 53-man roster, he should be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

WR Matt Willis - Willis is making it really difficult for the Lions release him. It remains to be seen if they will keep five wide receivers, but Willis strengthened his case for a roster spot on Thursday with a diving catch for 39 yards. He also nearly had a ridiculous 28-yard touchdown, but he was only able to get one foot down inbounds.

DE Willie Young - Young had 2 more sacks for the Lions on Thursday night. Hopefully his solid play in the preseason will carry over to the regular season this year.

CB Bill Bentley - Bentley picked off Matt Leinart early in this game, setting up the Lions' first touchdown. Bentley came back with another nice play shortly after, and he looked like the guy we had heard so much praise about early on in training camp.

DB Rashean Mathis - Mathis seems like a lock to make the 53-man roster at this point. He had a nice interception on Thursday, and he again showed off his versatility by playing both cornerback and safety.

P Blake Clingan - With Sam Martin out, Clingan got a chance to be the full-time punter, and he had 4 punts drop inside the 20-yard line, including one at the 4-yard line. He won't make the 53-man roster, but he has some good film to take with him as he tries to land with another team.

Losers

QB Matthew Stafford - Stafford's stat line -- 1 for 6 for 12 yards and an interception -- doesn't tell the whole story, as two of his passes were dropped, including the one that was picked off. However, Stafford missed an open Edwards twice on deep balls, and he just continued to look off his game. He has to play better when the regular season begins.

RB Mikel Leshoure - Leshoure actually ran the ball pretty well for parts of this game, but he had a bad fumble that set up a Bills field goal. If the Lions can get anything of value for him in a potential trade, they should probably go ahead and pull the trigger, because he just seems to be falling further and further behind Reggie Bush and Bell on the running back depth chart.

WR Nate Burleson - Burleson had a pretty rough preseason, and he was the receiver responsible for Stafford's interception on Thursday night, prompting this tweet:

4 yrs as a Lion...droppin the ball isn't me! Won't happen again & if it does, I'll donate 100 for each drop to a different elementary school

— Nathaniel E Burleson (@Nate13Burleson) August 30, 2013

Let's hope Burleson doesn't have to make too many donations, because he, like Stafford, has to start playing better once the regular season begins.

CB Chris Greenwood - Greenwood got burned on the Bills' 79-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. He was already on the outside looking in when it came to the 53-man roster, and Thursday pretty much solidified that he'll likely end up on the practice squad.

The Detroit Lions took it to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night in a 35-13 win.

The Detroit Lions continued their preseason dominance on Thursday night with a 35-13 win over the Buffalo Bills. The game was basically over midway through the first half, and the win sealed another above-.500 record for the Lions in the preseason. They finished 3-1 this year and are now 19-5 in the preseason since 2008.

Interestingly enough, this game actually began with a Lions turnover. A Matthew Stafford pass bounced right off Nate Burleson's hands and to a Bills defender for an interception on the game's opening drive, and following a quick three-and-out, it was more of the same for the No. 1 offense. Stafford overthrew Patrick Edwards on a long pass downfield for the second time in the game, and there was another drop. It was an ugly performance for Stafford and the starters.

After a Blake Clingan punt was downed at the 4-yard line, the Lions started to take control of this game. Three plays later, Matt Leinart was picked off by Bill Bentley, who took it back to the 8-yard line. On the very next play, Shaun Hill hit Edwards for a quick touchdown pass, and just like that, it was 7-0 Lions.

Following a Bills punt, the Lions again put together a scoring drive. This time, Hill found Joseph Fauria for 16 yards, a diving Matt Willis for 39 yards and Kris Durham for a 6-yard touchdown. Hill really did an impressive job leading the offense, and he left the game after two possessions with a pair of touchdowns.

After trading punts, the Lions continued pouring it on following a nice interception by Rashean Mathis. Just one play later, Joique Bell ran 23 yards untouched for a touchdown. The Lions displayed great blocking on the play, and Bell showed some speed by getting into the end zone for the score.

A Mikel Leshoure fumble on the Lions' next drive set up a Bills field goal, but the Lions quickly answered with another touchdown. Kellen Moore found Durham for 13 yards, Shaun Chapas for 7 yards and Edwards for 12 yards. The Lions appeared to score on a ridiculous 28-yard catch by Willis, but the play was overturned because he only had one foot inbounds. The Lions found the end zone -- for real this time -- on an 8-yard pass to Riddick, who had a 14-yard run earlier in the drive.

Following yet another Bills punt, Moore hooked up with Riddick again for a touchdown, this time from 4 yards out. The Lions' score came after the Bills muffed a punt, giving Detroit the ball at the Buffalo 10-yard line. The Lions turned another turnover into a touchdown just three plays later, and they took a 35-3 lead into halftime.

The second half opened with a lengthy Bills drive that ended with another field goal by Dustin Hopkins. This made the score 35-6 in favor of the Lions, and Buffalo tried to further cut into the lead by going for it on fourth-and-3 at the Detroit 11-yard line. Thaddeus Lewis, the quarterback who was just traded from Detroit to Buffalo last Sunday, was stopped short, keeping the score at 35-6. Before that, the Lions and Bills traded punts, and Moore was picked off on a pass that was batted into the air.

Thursday's game came to an end with more Lions punts, another fourth down stop by Detroit and a 79-yard Bills touchdown pass from Lewis to Marcus Easley. Chris Greenwood was burned on the touchdown, which made this a 35-13 game. The score remained 35-13 as the Lions and Bills ran out the final 7-plus minutes on the clock.

It's always nice to watch the Lions win, especially in such dominant fashion, but I'm glad the preseason is finally over. Now it's time for the Lions to establish their 53-man roster and get ready for Week 1 of the regular season against the Minnesota Vikings.
