Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham had some glowing praise for Ziggy Ansah following his standout performance in Week 3. A look at film should show us what Cunningham was talking about.

Every week, a Detroit Lions coach will make an offhand comment during an interview, and I will spend an inappropriate amount of time dissecting that statement. Welcome to CoachSpeak.

Ziggy Ansah is coming off his best performance as a Lion, posting 7 tackles, 2 sacks and a forced fumble in the Week 3 win over Washington. Did Gunther Cunningham have something to say about it? Oh, Gunther Cunningham had something to say about it.

"He reminds me of some of the great players I’ve seen. With Ziggy, you really don’t notice it until you look at the tapes how many plays he’s made that are almost the side of impossible … People said he didn’t have football instincts, well, I guess if you grow up in Africa you get some instincts. I don’t know what he has but he finds the ball really quickly."

Before I go any further, I’d just like to say how pleased I am to welcome Gunther to CoachSpeak. Jim Schwartz, by virtue of his position, will provide most of the fodder for this column. But like most head coaches, Schwartz is a master of understatement; the guy can conduct an entire press conference and say literally nothing. Gunther, on the other hand, places no such restrictions upon himself. As defensive coordinator and a man who escaped Nazi Germany as a child, Gunther will say anything he pleases. Fortunately for Lions fans, what pleases him is spouting off little bits of delightfully insane hyperbole like this. When Gunther Cunningham gives quotes, everyone wins.

Anyway, onto Ziggy Ansah -- performer of impossible feats, possessor of instincts born in the tropical Ghanaian sun. Since you’re obviously as interested as I am to lay eyes upon his miracles, let’s take Gun’s advice and check out the tape.

More than his instincts and ability to locate the ball in traffic, what really jumps out from Ansah’s performance last week is his length and athleticism, the two primary reasons the Lions drafted him. His 2 sacks were nice plays, in that getting Robert Griffin III on the ground is a chore in and of itself. But Ansah owes a lot to Ndamukong Suh for one of those sacks, and the other came during a long-developing play at the end of the first half. Ansah made a few impressive plays in run defense, when his natural burst and long arms allowed him to make a couple plays that other defensive ends might not have.

Here you’ll see Ansah lined up on the right side of your screen, far outside the left tackle. Washington is going to run a quick toss to Alfred Morris on the strong side.

Notice how far away from the play Ansah is as it develops. After being slightly delayed by Suh, Morris turns upfield. Meanwhile, the Lions’ linebackers get swept out of the play entirely. DeAndre Levy (bottom center) is about to get absolutely abused by Trent Williams, and Nick Fairley (directly above Levy) gets cut, leaving Morris with a lot of room in front of him.

Ansah, true to Gunther’s word, goes full Superman, and manages to tackle Morris for a 4-yard gain. If he doesn’t, Morris is going right around Williams to bust a long run, and from this part of the field, probably a touchdown. Maybe Glover Quin cuts him off before that, but we’ll never know, because Ansah doesn’t let that happen.

Here’s another, and probably my favorite play from last week:

Washington runs a pretty basic toss sweep to Ansah’s side, leaving him matched up against Williams. Two first-round draft picks going at it one-on-one? Interesting battle. How did it play out?

Ansah sets the edge, keeping his outside arm free in contain by never allowing Williams to reach him inside. Ansah stretches the play out all the way past the numbers before bringing down Morris for a 1-yard gain.

Trent Williams is a Pro Bowl left tackle.

It wasn’t all positive, unfortunately, despite what Gunther would have you believe. As Jeremy Reisman illustrated after Week 1, Ansah still struggles to locate the ball at times, making him susceptible to play action.

This is essentially the same offensive formation as the first play, only the wide receiver (No. 15, coming from the left) is motioning inside to run an end-around when the ball is snapped.

Washington runs a play-action pass here, faking the handoff to Morris off-tackle. The entire front seven buys it, including Ansah, who doesn’t even take a step into the backfield before coming across. Thankfully Washington didn’t actually run the end-around, because there is no one behind Ansah for a good 20 yards. (To be fair, it was a pretty impressive play fake.) Instead, Griffin III keeps the ball, and this is what it looks like when he delivers the pass:

In what was one of the bigger reliefs of Sunday’s game, the Lions’ secondary covered well, and the result was an incomplete pass.

Ziggy Ansah has shown remarkable development through the first three games of his career, and the Lions’ coaching staff and fans have to be ecstatic about his quick ascension from "raw" prospect to legitimate starter, particularly with the loss of Jason Jones. He uses his top-tier size and athleticism to get himself in the position to make a lot of plays, and when he does, he shows the ability to tackle well in space.

What the Lions need is for that trend to continue. With the 3-0 Chicago Bears and Deadeye Jay Cutler (and I mean that not as a reflection of his accuracy, but rather his visible lack of human emotion) coming to Detroit, the Lions are going to need an impressive game out of Ansah and their front four to come out with a win.

After a somewhat promising start to the season, the Detroit Lions' running game was stopped against one of the worst run defenses in the league. Our film review looks for an explanation.

The Detroit Lions came into Sunday's contest with the Washington Redskins with a decent-looking running game. Reggie Bush and Joique Bell had combined for 171 yards on 3.9 a carry through two weeks. The Redskins had the worst statistical run defense in the league at the time. So, even without Bush in the lineup, the Lions were expected to be successful running the ball against the Redskins. Yet, Detroit only managed 63 yards on 2.7 a carry. The most obvious explanation was the absence of Bush, but that answer seemed too simple and not very accurate. So I went to the tape for answers, and I found three reasons the Lions couldn't get things going against the Redskins.

1) The Redskins are dirty, dirty cheaters

Okay, maybe that's putting things a little too harshly, but the Redskins pulled a stunt several times in this game that helped make the Detroit offensive line powerless. And it all started on the very first offensive snap of the day. This example comes on a passing play, but this is just the most blatant and obvious example:

As you can see, the Redskins defender has Rob Sims in a bear hug. The idea here is to completely neutralize him, and drag him to the side. This way, the blitzing linebacker has a wide-open hole to get into the backfield, and Sims is powerless to do anything about it. The same concept can work for a running play. An offensive lineman may try to head to the second level to take out a linebacker, but if he's held by a defensive tackle, that linebacker is free to shoot into the backfield and disrupt the play early on. The Redskins were finally called for this penalty later in the game and scaled back on this tactic afterward.

2) The Lions were too slow getting to the second level

When the Lions weren't getting held, they were having trouble getting to the second level on their own. On this play, Corey Hilliard waits too long to disengage from his initial assignment, gets caught up and can't get a hand on the aggressive linebacker:

Hilliard and Larry Warford double team the defensive tackle. After Warford gets into position, Hilliard should shoot to the second level and clean out the linebacker. However, that never happens.

Warford never gets great position on the tackle, but Hilliard gets his feet caught up in the mess and is too slow to react to the linebacker, who gets into the backfield before Bell even has the ball in his hands. The Redskins linebackers played this aggressively throughout the entire game, and the Lions were consistently too slow to react.

3) The Lions offensive line was not on the same page

On two different occasions, I saw some frustration between Dominic Raiola and Sims. On the following play, both saw their responsibilities differently.

Both players believed they were supposed to help the other with the defensive tackle, then, once the other lineman had control of the situation, they would head to the second level. This is not how it works. One lineman needs to stay with the tackle and seal the hole while the other heads to take out the linebacker. Here's what happened:

From Sims' perspective, the play is going well so far. He is pushing the tackle toward Raiola and is waiting for Dom to curl around to the left side of the defender and seal the hole from that side. When Dom does this, Sims will head to the second level and take out the linebacker who is closing in on the play at the top of the screen.

However, from Raiola's perspective, things are not going as planned. He needs Sims to get to the right side of the defender, but Sims is sealing the hole from the left side. Raiola decides he's going to go do his job anyway and heads to the second level.

Joique initially decides to run left, but when he sees the unblocked linebacker closing in on him, he decides to cut it right. Since Sims is sealing his man on the left side, he has no leverage to the right and the defensive tackle makes the play for no gain.

It's impossible for me to know who had the play right and who had it wrong, but I can tell you this: both players thought they were in the right:

Overall, I thought Bell did what he could with the line play. A mixture of aggressive, smart play from the Redskins linebackers, communication errors on the Lions front line and a dash of cheating caused the Lions to stall on the ground on Sunday. It's clear this offense's strength is still in the passing game, and they have a ways to go before opponents will consider them a well-balanced offense.

Joseph Fauria broke out another outstanding celebration after a touchdown on Sunday.

Through three games, undrafted free agent tight end Joseph Fauria has 2 touchdowns. The rookie has become a legitimate weapon in the red zone for the Detroit Lions, and he has already become quite well known for his celebrations. In Week 1, for example, he broke out a Miley Cyrus-like dance after scoring his first career touchdown.

On Sunday against the Washington Redskins, Fauria did the 'N Sync "Bye, Bye, Bye" dance following his latest touchdown. Even better, he tweeted this line from the song following the game:

You may hate me, but it ain't no lie...

— Joseph Fauria (@BigJoeFauria) September 22, 2013

How did he come up with this particular celebration? WXYZ's Brad Galli pointed out that Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake did a sketch on the "Evolution of End Zone Dancing" earlier this month. At the end of the sketch, Fallon did the dance we saw Fauria perform on Sunday, and it turns out that Fallon later offered to match the fine and donate it to charity if any player did a celebration from the video.

Now, Fauria won't be fined for his celebration, but perhaps he will get a donation to charity from Fallon anyway. And at the very least, perhaps he will receive some extra attention for the celebration on Late Night on Monday.

Lions notes looks at various tidbits from Sunday's win over the Washington Redskins.

Like seemingly every Sunday, Calvin Johnson put his name in the record books against the Washington Redskins. For starters, he became only the fifth player in NFL history to reach 8,000 yards receiving in less than 100 games, and he became just the second player in team history to get to 8,000 yards receiving. What's more, he tied Herman Moore's franchise record for the most games with at least 100 yards receiving (34).

In addition to those statistical feats, Johnson recorded his 500th career catch on Sunday, putting him in some elite company for receivers with 500 catches and 8,000 yards in less than 100 games.

Matthew Stafford joined some elite company of his own by becoming just the second player since 2001 to throw for at least 200 yards in the first half in each of his first three games of the season, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Tom Brady is the only other player to accomplish that feat since '01.

Stafford is currently on pace to throw for 5,440 yards this season. (He has 1,020 through three games.)

At the end of Sunday's game, when the Redskins threw a Hail Mary, the Lions put Johnson back deep with Glover Quin and Louis Delmas.

As noted by Dave Birkett, Sunday's game was Joique Bell's first start since November 2009, when he was still at Wayne State. And as noted by Chris McCosky, Bell became the first Wayne State player to start a game in the NFL since Tom Beer in 1996. (Both of those stats were produced by Joe Abramson.)

The Lions decided to start Rashean Mathis at cornerback on Sunday instead of Darius Slay. After the game, Jim Schwartz explained the thought process behind the decision:

Schwartz: Slay's going to be an outstanding player. As a rookie he's going to see a lot. This was a complicated gameplan against spread.

— Tom Leyden (@TomLeyden) September 22, 2013

The Lions' offensive line has gotten the job done in a big way through three games. As noted by Daniel Jeremiah, the Lions have thrown the ball 121 times, and yet they've allowed only 2 sacks thus far.

Nate Burleson had quite a game on Sunday. His 116 yards receiving were the most for him since the end of the 2007 season, and he had a great comment about his performance afterward:

#Lions WR @Nate13Burleson's 116 yards receiving today were his most since Dec. 30, 2007. Nate: "If this is the Jackson 5, I'll be Tito."

The Redskins defense was as bad as advertised.

Patrick McDermott

Here are three things that jumped out to me on Sunday during the Detroit Lions' win over the Washington Redskins.

The Detroit Lions beat the Washington Redskins by a score of 27-20 on Sunday. Here are my three main takeaways from the game:

Joique Bell is the real deal

Over the last year, Bell has repeatedly shown that he is talented. Sunday was the first time he started and carried the load at running back for the Lions, though, and he proved that he's more than capable of being a starter in the NFL. In place of Reggie Bush, Bell rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, and he picked up 69 yards receiving on 4 catches. He was a difference maker for the Lions, and Bell should continue to be a big part of the offense even when Bush returns.

Ziggy Ansah is a star in the making

It helps playing alongside Ndamukong Suh and taking advantage of all the pressure he creates, but Ansah has been outstanding in the first three games of the season. On Sunday against the Redskins, he was especially good. Ansah finished with 7 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble. He now has 2.5 sacks on the season, and if not for a pair of strip-sacks being negated by penalties in the first two weeks, he'd be up to 4.5 sacks already. He has been really impressive so far in his young NFL career.

Matthew Stafford is looking like his 2011 self

Stafford went 25 for 42 for 385 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception on Sunday. In total, he's completed 63.6 percent of his passes so far this season, and he's thrown for 1,020 yards, 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He's been much more consistent than he was in 2012 and this year's preseason, and he looks like the quarterback we saw when the Lions went 10-6 and made the playoffs in 2011. Keep it up, Matthew.

Reggie Bush didn't play against the Washington Redskins, but he guaranteed after the game that he will return next week.

The Detroit Lions showed on Sunday that they can win without running back Reggie Bush, but they don't want to have to keep proving that going forward. Bush is a big part of the offense, and they need him back from his knee injury sooner rather than later.

With that in mind, Bush had some good news after Sunday's game. He told ESPN's Michael Rothstein that he would have played against the Washington Redskins if it had been a playoff game. Also, he indicated that the Lions held him out for precautionary reasons and that he doesn't plan on sitting next week. In fact, he guaranteed that he will return in Week 4 against the Chicago Bears. From MLive's Kyle Meinke:

"I guarantee I'll play next week," he told MLive.com in the locker room following an emotional 27-20 win.

Guarantee? You sure?

"Yes," he said. "Knee's good. I'll be back this week."

Thanks to Joique Bell, the Lions got by without Bush. Bell rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, and he picked up 69 more yards on 4 receptions. The Lions also used Theo Riddick on Sunday, although he only had 2 carries for -2 yards and 1 catch for 8 yards.

Getting Bush back next week would be huge for Detroit with first place on the line against the Bears. Bell was outstanding, but being able to pair him with Bush for a two-headed attack out of the backfield would be very nice for offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.

The Detroit Lions have lost defensive end Jason Jones for the season.

The Detroit Lions got some bad news following their 27-20 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday: Jason Jones is out for the season. The defensive end went down with a non-contact knee injury during Sunday's game, and it turns out that he ruptured his patellar tendon. He had to be carted off the field following the injury, so it's no surprise that the diagnosis is so serious.

For the Lions, this means they are down a starting defensive end. Jones was added in the offseason as part of the Lions' makeover at the position, and he became an immediate starter. Coming into Sunday's game, he only had 1 tackle and 1 pass defended, but his versatility and veteran presence was a nice addition to the D-line.

With Jones out for the season, the Lions will have to add a new defensive end this coming week. My bet is that former Lion Lawrence Jackson will get a phone call. He spent time with the Minnesota Vikings this past offseason, but he was released last month. He's still a free agent, and he seems to make the most sense in terms of a replacement for Jones on the roster.

The Lions do have four healthy defensive ends with Ziggy Ansah, Willie Young, Israel Idonije and Devin Taylor, who was inactive on Sunday. I suppose it's possible they could roll with them, but adding a veteran to replace Jones seems like a given at this point.
