Gunther Cunningham is staying with the Detroit Lions as a senior coaching assistant.

It turns out that Gunther Cunningham has been retained by the Detroit Lions after all. He's obviously not returning as the team's defensive coordinator (that job now belongs to Teryl Austin), but Dave Birkett reports that Cunningham will be kept on staff as a senior coaching assistant.

Cunningham's contract with the Lions runs through 2014, and there was some speculation during the head coaching search that he might be retained. Jim Caldwell opted to hire Austin as his new defensive coordinator, but the Lions have apparently decided to create a new role for Cunningham for 2014.

It's not exactly clear what this role will entail for Cunningham, but here's some insight from Birkett:

Don't know all the specifics of his role, but Gun is very thorough in draft/free agent analysis & very in tune with the numbers of the game

Cunningham has made no secret that he is a fan of Pro Football Focus, so perhaps instead of dealing with schemes and calling plays and things like that, he will spend 2014 evaluating individual players for the Lions. In any case, this is pretty interesting news, as it looked like Cunningham was not going to be back this year.

It's official: Jim Bob Cooter is the Detroit Lions' new quarterbacks coach.

The Detroit Lions have officially hired Jim Bob Cooter as their new quarterbacks coach. It was first reported last week that Cooter was set to get the job, and now he is officially a part of the coaching staff.

Cooter is headed to Detroit after serving as an offensive assistant for the Denver Broncos in 2013. Ian Rapoport tweeted that losing Cooter is a "tough blow" for the Broncos, as he was "really valuable" to them. Also, ESPN's Jeff Legwold reported on Sunday that Cooter "will be difficult to replace" for Denver. According to Legwold, Cooter played a "key part" in Denver's "gameplanning infrastructure" on offense, and Cooter was seemingly pretty highly thought of despite not being a position coach. Here's more from Legwold:

Cooter had just completed his first season with the Broncos in 2013, but he was a key part of the offense’s gameplanning infrastructure given his work in preparing scouting reports on opposing defenses, his ability to spot trends and potential matchups on gameday and his day-to-day work with Manning. Those who know Cooter from the Broncos’ and the other staffs he’s worked for, including the Colts and Kansas City Chiefs, say Cooter was able to contribute new ideas into the offense and that he is considered a future playcaller as well.

Legwold went on to suggest that Cooter would have received a promotion in Denver if the Broncos had lost some of their offensive assistants to other teams. Since Denver made it to the Super Bowl, offensive coordinator Adam Gase didn't receive a head coaching job this year, and there was no room for someone like Cooter to move up the ranks in Denver as a result. This worked out well for the Lions, as they were able to hire Cooter to be their quarterbacks coach.

Cooter spent a few years as an offensive assistant in Indianapolis with Jim Caldwell, and now the two have been reunited in Detroit. Throw in Joe Lombardi as the offensive coordinator and there seems to be a really solid group of coaches set to work with Matthew Stafford. Going forward, there's really no excuse for Stafford to not improve given all of the resources the Lions are providing him to get better.

The Detroit Lions are reportedly going to hire Denver Broncos assistant Jim Bob Cooter as their new quarterbacks coach.

On Friday, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi indicated that the team was still planning to hire a dedicated quarterbacks coach. That position appears to be the last major vacancy on the coaching staff, but it may not be open for long, because Bruce Feldman reports that the Lions are on the verge of hiring Denver Broncos assistant Jim Bob Cooter to be their new quarterbacks coach.

Cooter, who played quarterback in college at Tennessee, was mentioned earlier this week as a potential addition to the Lions coaching staff. He served as an offensive assistant with the Broncos in 2013, and he was also an offensive assistant from 2009-11 on Jim Caldwell's Indianapolis Colts coaching staff. In 2012, Cooter was an offensive quality control coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.

If the Lions do in fact hire Cooter, I'd have to imagine that they would finally be able to finalize their coaching staff. As mentioned, quarterbacks coach is the last notable vacancy on the coaching staff. The Lions could always create other positions to fill, but at this point the coaching staff seems to be on the verge of being finalized.

The Detroit Lions have reportedly hired another assistant coach.

The Detroit Lions have reportedly added yet another assistant to their coaching staff. According to CoachingSearch.com, the Lions have hired Delaware tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Devin Fitzsimmons to be their assistant special teams coach.

Jim Caldwell previously elected to retain special teams coordinator John Bonamego, who joined the Lions last year. Caldwell also brought back Evan Rothstein as the Lions' quality control coach for special teams, so the addition of Fitzsimmons apparently means that the Lions will have three coaches involved with the special teams units in 2014.

Fitzsimmons is joining the Lions after spending the 2013 season at Delaware. Before that, he was an offensive assistant at Rutgers in 2012, an offensive quality control coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2011 (on Caldwell's coaching staff), a tight ends coach at Richmond in 2010 and a graduate assistant at Virginia in 2009. He also spent some time at Shaw University, Bucknell and Kansas State.

The Detroit Lions reportedly may be looking at hiring a couple Denver Broncos coaches.

The Detroit Lions filled a couple more openings on their coaching staff this week by hiring Tony Oden and Matt Raich. It sort of looked like the Lions were on the verge of finalizing their coaching staff with those two additions, but now it appears that more moves may be coming. Specifically, the Lions may be taking a look at hiring a couple assistant coaches from the Denver Broncos, according to Mike Garafolo.

Jim Bob Cooter is currently an offensive assistant for the Broncos. He held the same position in Indianapolis with Jim Caldwell from 2009-11, and he was an offensive quality control coach with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2012. He played quarterback at Tennessee in college, so perhaps he is a candidate for the Lions' quarterbacks coach job.

Chris Beake is a defensive quality control coach for the Broncos. Interestingly, he was an offensive assistant for the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns before going to Denver, and he also coached linebackers in Atlanta for a few seasons. It's unclear what position he could end up taking in Detroit given his diverse coaching background, but he played quarterback in college at Air Force.

The Detroit Lions have reportedly added two more people to their coaching staff.

The Detroit Lions have reportedly hired two more assistant coaches as they continue to put together their coaching staff. CoachingSearch.com reports that Tony Oden has been added as an assistant and Matt Raich has been hired as the quality control coach on defense.

Oden met with Jim Caldwell at the Senior Bowl a couple weeks ago. At the time, it seemed like Oden was interviewing for the Lions' secondary coach job, but the Lions instead hired Alan Williams to fill that role. Oden, who previously coached defensive backs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints, will likely assist Williams with the secondary.

Raich's hiring comes after it was previously reported that he was expected to join Caldwell's coaching staff. Raich was most recently the linebackers coach at Duquesne, and he was the Arizona Cardinals' linebackers coach (on the same coaching staff as Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin) before that.

At this point, it seems like the Lions' coaching staff has been finalized for the most part. They still have an opening at quarterbacks coach, but it doesn't look like they are planning to hire someone since both Caldwell and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi have experience with QBs. If that is the case, then their coaching staff may be complete with the addition of Oden and Raich.

The Detroit Lions have reportedly hired their new wide receivers coach.

The Detroit Lions have moved another step closer to completing their coaching staff. According to Alex Marvez, the Lions have hired former Boise State offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Robert Prince to be their new wide receivers coach. He replaces Tim Lappano, who was let go by the Lions when Jim Schwartz was fired a day after completing the 2013 season.

Prince joins the Lions after spending the last three seasons at Boise State. This was actually his second stint with Boise State, and he served as the offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. He was the wide receivers coach for all three seasons during his second stint at Boise State, but he was not retained by the program's new head coach.

Before returning to Boise State, Prince spent several years in the NFL. He was an offensive assistant with the Atlanta Falcons from 2004-06, and he helped coach quarterbacks, running backs and tight ends during that time. In 2007, Prince was hired as the Jacksonville Jaguars' assistant wide receivers coach, and he spent two seasons in that role. In 2009, he left for the Seattle Seahawks to be their wide receivers coach, and he spent one year with them before returning to the college ranks as Colorado's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.

With Prince joining the staff, it appears that the only remaining opening is at quarterbacks coach. However, it's not clear if the Lions are even planning to hire a dedicated quarterbacks coach with Jim Caldwell and Joe Lombardi more than capable of filling that role. If the Lions aren't going to hire a quarterbacks coach, then their coaching staff has already basically been finalized.

(Also, yes, the Lions now have a Robert Prince and Ron Prince coaching their wide receivers and tight ends. Holy confusing.)

The Detroit Lions have officially hired their new secondary coach.

It's official: Alan Williams is the new secondary coach of the Detroit Lions. We first heard that he was joining Jim Caldwell's coaching staff earlier in the week, and the Lions officially announced the hire on Friday.

Williams joins the Lions after spending the last two seasons in Minnesota as the Vikings' defensive coordinator. Before that, he was the Indianapolis Colts' defensive backs coach from 2002-11 and a defensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001. Caldwell was on the same coaching staff as Williams in both Indy and Tampa, so that likely played a big role in Williams getting the job in Detroit.

In other coaching news, Dave Birkett reports that the Lions are going to add former Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach Matt Raich as a quality control assistant on defense.
