Nate Freese opened Friday's game by booting the ball through the uprights on the opening kickoff. He then followed that up with a missed extra point (from 33 yards out) before later hitting a field goal from 55 yards out. Talk about an odd game.

George Winn only had nine yards on eight carries, but he made two tackles on special teams. What's more, the Lions actually had him out there with the first-team kickoff coverage unit. This is a sign that he could be making a move for the final roster spot at running back, which would be bad news for Mikel Leshoure.

A look at the Detroit Lions who stood out for good reasons and those who stood out for bad reasons on Friday night.

The Detroit Lions lost to the Oakland Raiders on Friday night by a score of 27-26. Here's a look at some "winners" and "losers" from the game:

Winners

QB Matthew Stafford - Stafford went 9 of 10 for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Enough said.

QB Dan Orlovsky - After a rough outing last week, Orlovsky really needed a strong performance to get fans off his back a bit, and he delivered on Friday night. He went 8 of 12 for 153 yards, and more importantly, he showed that he's capable of moving the offense down the field, even without much help from his offensive line (more on that later). I know the Kellen Moore/backup QB controversy story this past week has been fun, but Orlovsky's performance should put an end to that for the time being.

RB Theo Riddick - Riddick only carried the ball twice for a single yard, but he went for 36 yards on a screen pass by dodging several defenders. The reception gave him a chance to show what he can do in the open field, and it was a good example of why he received so much hype this offseason. (And just generally speaking, it was seemingly the first screen pass that actually resulted in a positive play for the Lions all preseason.)

WR Kris Durham - Durham only had two catches for six yards, but one of those receptions was an outstanding touchdown grab over a defender. It was only one play, but he really needed something to hang his hat on given that he's battling for a roster spot. Considering how effectively he used his size to get the ball, that touchdown reception was a nice example of what he can do from a matchup standpoint, especially in the red zone.

WR Ryan Broyles - Broyles had two receptions for 42 yards, including one that went for a gain of 34 yards thanks to a nice run after the catch. He again looked healthy, and based on what he did with a limited number of targets, I think Broyles should get a serious run with the first-team offense in the coming weeks.

Defensive line - The Lions rotated a number of defensive linemen into the game when they had their first-team defense out on the field, and nearly everybody was seemingly making plays. Matt Schaub had a tough time doing much of anything considering the Lions were constantly putting so much pressure on him, and even later in the game the D-line was still bringing the heat. (Just ask Derek Carr, who suffered a concussion on a big hit by Larry Webster.)

Losers

OT LaAdrian Waddle - Waddle is trying to beat out Corey Hilliard to start at right tackle, but he didn't have his best game, to say the least. On top of a blown assignment on one play that led to a loss, Waddle was flagged for holding on first-and-goal at the Oakland 10-yard line. Overall, it just wasn't a very impressive performance for him as the starting right tackle.

Second-team offensive line - The second-team offensive line also wasn't very impressive. Actually, they were downright bad. When Orlovsky initially came into the game, he had a tough time getting anything going because he didn't have any time to throw the ball. The blocking was poor, and penalties were an issue for the second-stringers on the O-line. (The Lions had a couple different O-line combinations after the starters departed, including one with Michael Williams at left tackle, Travis Swanson at left guard, Darren Keyton at center, Rodney Austin at right guard and Hilliard at right tackle.)

Running game - As a team, the Lions ran the ball 26 times for 53 yards and one touchdown. That's an average of 2.0 yards per carry. Mikel Leshoure actually led the Lions in rushing despite having only 23 yards on seven carries (3.3 average). There didn't seem to be a big emphasis on running the ball when the starters were in, but still, it wasn't a great effort on the ground for the Lions.

Special teams - Although Nate Freese did hit a 55-yard field goal, he missed an extra point. That wasn't even the worst part about the special teams on Friday, though. That distinction belongs to the cover units. Oakland averaged 23.3 yards on their kick returns (with a long of 30) and 25.3 yards on their punt returns (with a long of 51). Throw in the Lions' too many men on the field penalty that gave the Raiders a free first down on a field goal and it was just a rough night for the Lions on special teams.

Discipline - Along the same lines, the Lions did a really poor job of avoiding penalties in this game. They finished the night with 11 for 74 yards, and a few of those penalties were really untimely, as evidenced by the too many men on the field call. I know the officials are calling certain things much tighter now, but avoidable mental mistakes led to some of those penalties.

Officials - This pretty much sums up the officiating in this game:

That's a picture of one official signaling a touchdown while another signals an incompletion. The incomplete ruling was the final call, but that wasn't the only time something like this happened. Later in the game, one official ruled that the Lions downed a punt inside the 1-yard line while another said it was a touchback. In that case, the touchback call won out.

Those two incidents were far from the only issues the officials had. There were a couple other blown calls, and overall the game was just very sloppy from an officiating standpoint. Part of that stemmed from the NFL's emphasis on calling certain penalties (illegal contact, defensive holding, illegal hands to the face, etc.), but this crew just seemed lost out there. It was like watching the replacement refs from a couple years ago.

The Detroit Lions led for most of Friday night, but a late touchdown gave the Oakland Raiders a 27-26 victory.

The Detroit Lions made a late comeback to beat the Cleveland Browns last week, and there was another late comeback this week against the Oakland Raiders. Unfortunately for the Lions, they were on the wrong end of the comeback on Friday night. The Lions looked like they were going to keep Oakland out of the end zone to preserve their 26-20 lead, but instead, a touchdown with six seconds left gave the Raiders a 27-26 victory.

Unlike the preseason opener, the Lions didn't have to wait until the end of the fourth quarter for a touchdown this week. Eight plays into the opening drive of the game, Matt Schaub was picked off by James Ihedigbo on a pass that was deflected by Rashean Mathis. Ihedigbo took the interception back 38 yards to the Oakland 36, and Matthew Stafford found a wide open Golden Tate for a 28-yard touchdown two plays later.

After a quick three-and-out by the Raiders, the Lions put together another scoring drive. This time, they went 58 yards over the course of 11 plays and 6:43. The drive was extended at one point with a 23-yard pass to Eric Ebron on third-and-8, and the Lions managed to find the end zone despite later facing second-and-goal from the 20. A 16-yard pass to Kevin Ogletree put the Lions in position to score, and Kris Durham made a stellar catch on the next play for a touchdown. He took the ball out of the air, and suddenly the Lions had a 13-0 lead. (Nate Freese missed his 33-yard extra point attempt after the first touchdown, but he made it after the second score.)

After the two teams combined for back-to-back three-and-outs, the Raiders took over with their sights set on scoring some points of their own. It looked like they were going to have to settle for only three points after electing to kick a field goal on fourth-and-2 from the 37, but a Lions penalty for too many men on the field kept the drive alive. The Lions gave Oakland another free first down via a penalty on third-and-8 later in the drive, and the Raiders eventually scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run by Darren McFadden.

Following another Lions three-and-out (now with the second-team offense in the game), the Raiders again put some points on the board. This time, they did in fact have to settle for a field goal after a close play in the end zone on third-and-2 was ruled incomplete. The Raiders challenged the call, but the ruling was upheld, making this a 13-10 game in favor of the Lions after the field goal. (Earlier in the game, by the way, Jim Caldwell was successful on his first challenge as head coach of the Lions. He challenged the spot on a punt, and it turned out that the officials gave the Raiders around seven yards too many on the original call.)

On their final drive of the first half, the Lions took a 16-10 lead on a 55-yard field goal by Freese that was kicked from the dirt portion of the field. The Lions added the three points despite the offensive line doing its best to take the team out of field goal range. That was really the theme of the entire drive. Penalties and very little protection for Dan Orlovsky made it tough to move the ball, but a 23-yard pass to Jeremy Ross and a nice 34-yard reception by Ryan Broyles got the Lions into position to add some points before halftime.

The Lions added more points on their first drive of the second half. Ross opened the drive with a 19-yard reception, and Theo Riddick later picked up 36 yards with some great moves on a screen. After a 15-yard pass to Corey Fuller, George Winn scored from a yard out to give the Lions a 23-10 lead.

After the two teams traded punts, the Raiders put together another scoring drive of their own. The drive actually should have been a three-and-out, but an extremely questionable spot on third-and-5 gave the Raiders a first down, even after Caldwell challenged the ruling (it was upheld, amazingly). The Raiders then attacked the Lions through the air with passes that went for 29 and 38 yards. This put them on the three-yard line, and Derek Carr found Jake Murphy for a touchdown on the very next play.

The Raiders continued to cut into the Lions' lead after a Detroit three-and-out. Kellen Moore came in for the Lions at quarterback, and the Raiders actually brought a couple starters back into the game on defense. Things didn't go well for the Lions, and the Raiders capitalized by returning the ensuing punt 51 yards to the Detroit 23. Oakland was unable to turn the big return into a touchdown, but a field goal made this a 23-20 game.

The Lions answered with a field goal of their own on a 14-play drive that covered 76 yards and took 6:32 off the clock. Moore made several good throws on this possession, and he got the Lions all the way down inside the 10-yard line. The drive stalled there, but Giorgio Tavecchio connected on a field goal from 25 yards out to put the Lions on top by six points.

The Raiders responded by nearly taking the lead despite losing Carr to an injury after he got drilled by Larry Webster. There probably should have been a fumble on the play, but the officials ruled it incomplete, and the Lions didn't have any challenges left. With the Raiders keeping the ball, Matt McGloin came into the game and quickly led the offense down the field. He had a 29-yard pass that got the Raiders into Detroit territory, and it looked like a 24-yard pass to Scott Simonson was going to go for a touchdown. Before Simonson was able to get into the end zone, however, he was drilled by DeJon Gomes, who forced the ball loose. Brandon Hepburn fell on it for a fumble recovery, giving the Lions possession and keeping them ahead, 26-20.

Unable to do anything following the turnover, the Lions punted the ball away after going three-and-out. This gave the Raiders one more chance to rally back from their 26-20 deficit in the last couple minutes, and rally back they did. McGloin led the Raiders down the field on a 13-play drive and connected with Brice Butler for a 19-yard touchdown pass with only six seconds left on the clock. Sebastian Janikowski nailed the extra point, giving the Raiders a 27-26 lead and the victory.

The Lions will be back at home next week for their "dress rehearsal" for the regular season. Their game against the Jacksonville Jaguars is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Aug. 22.

The Detroit Lions will be without Calvin Johnson when they take on the Oakland Raiders on Friday night, as he has been ruled out for the game.

As part of their effort to carefully manage his reps this preseason, the Detroit Lions have ruled out wide receiver Calvin Johnson for Friday night's game against the Oakland Raiders. Johnson also missed last week's game against the Cleveland Browns, so he has yet to play in the 2014 preseason.

Johnson isn't believed to be dealing with an actual injury right now, so his absence on Friday is precautionary more than anything. After having a pair of offseason surgeries, the Lions just want to make sure that Johnson is good to go for the regular season, and the last thing they need is for him to suffer an injury in a game that doesn't count. And considering the Lions are basically playing on a baseball field in Oakland, there's really no need to risk it with Johnson this week.

Also out on Friday night for the Lions are wide receiver TJ Jones and defensive end Ziggy Ansah. The Lions activated Ansah from the PUP list earlier this week, but he's not ready to play in a game just yet. There's a good chance he will make his preseason debut next week, but it's not quite as clear when Jones will be back, as he is still on the PUP list.

With Johnson and Ansah out, Kris Durham and Devin Taylor are once again slated to start for the Lions. George Johnson and C.J. Mosley are also slated to start (at defensive end and defensive tackle), so the Lions' first-team defensive line should look quite interesting on Friday night.

Here are 10 things to watch in the Detroit Lions' preseason game against the Oakland Raiders.

The Detroit Lions are set to take on the Oakland Raiders on the road on Friday night. Here are 10 things to keep an eye on during the game:

1. How Dan Orlovsky responds to the backup QB "drama"

After an uninspiring performance in his first game back with the Lions, Orlovsky has been the target of a lot of criticism this week. What's more, there have been a lot of calls for the Lions to demote Orlovsky to third string. Against the Raiders, Orlovsky will have a chance to make a statement, and he could really use a strong performance to quiet the chatter about the backup quarterback job.

2. How Kellen Moore follows up last week's performance

One way for the chatter to continue about the backup quarterback job is if Moore has another strong outing. The expectation is for him to remain in the No. 3 spot, but perhaps he could sway the coaches to give him some No. 2 reps in the future if he has another good game.

3. The overall game plan

Last week's game plan against the Cleveland Browns seemed almost excessively conservative. That's par for the course in the preseason, I suppose, but I'm interested to see if the Lions open things up at all in their second exhibition game. I'm not saying they should go crazy with looks they may be saving for the regular season, but something more than an ultra-conservative game plan would be nice.

4. How long the starters play

Along the same lines, it will be interesting to see how many reps the starters get this week. Last week, the offensive starters barely even played, and the defensive starters weren't in the game for that long, either. Once again, that's par for the course in the preseason, but perhaps the first-team offense and defense will get an extra series or two this week.

5. George Winn and Mikel Leshoure

His fumble aside, Winn really looked impressive at running back last week. He certainly looked better than Leshoure, who is fighting to make the team as one of the backups at running back. Before last week, the thinking was that Winn was simply fighting for a spot on the practice squad, but depending on what happens this week, perhaps he could get into the mix for a roster spot, especially if Leshoure has another lackluster game.

6. Travis Swanson's snaps

Swanson had a bad snap that led to a turnover in last week's game, and he has seemingly had quite a few issues with snapping the ball throughout training camp. Although he is expected to be a backup as a rookie, you never know when an injury might happen, so the Lions need to be able to trust him at center. It'll be tough to do that if his snap problems continue, though.

7. How Nick Fairley handles his demotion

It's been a pretty tough week for Fairley, who was demoted to the second-team defense in practice. C.J. Mosley took his spot with the starters, and much has been made about Fairley's weight and overall effort. He's not going to be able to put those concerns to rest in a preseason game, of course, but how Fairley responds to this difficult week could say a lot about his mindset going forward.

8. If any defensive backs really step it up

The Lions got some good performances out of a couple backup safeties last week (Isa Abdul-Quddus and Jerome Couplin), but the secondary as a whole has a lot to prove. That goes for both the starters and the backups, and it would be nice to see some cornerbacks and safeties really bring it this week.

9. The kicker battle

Although Nate Freese seems to be emerging as the clear favorite to win the Lions' starting kicker job, a lot could happen in the final few weeks of the preseason. If Freese misses a few kicks in Oakland and Giorgio Tavecchio has a perfect day, for example, perhaps Tavecchio could jump into the lead. This position battle is far from settled at this point.

10. Injuries

As always, the main goal for this week's preseason game is to simply get through it without any serious injuries happening. The Lions emerged from last week's preseason opener as an extremely healthy team, and hopefully it will be more of the same this week.
