Here's a rundown of some winners and losers from the Detroit Lions' win over the Buffalo Bills.

The Detroit Lions beat the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night by a score of 23-0. Here's a look at some "winners" and "losers" from the game:

Winners

QB Kellen Moore - Moore probably isn't going to be the Lions' backup quarterback -- it's pretty clear the team has already picked Dan Orlovsky for that role. However, he has made it tough for the Lions to release him. All preseason it has seemed like the Lions would keep only two quarterbacks, but perhaps Moore should stick around in the No. 3 role after going 17-for-28 for 172 yards and two touchdowns on Thursday night. He was outstanding all preseason.

WR Corey Fuller - Fuller caught three passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. That might not necessarily seem like much, but he gave the Lions another glimpse of his potential. Considering he was probably more likely to end up on the practice squad than the 53-man roster going into Thursday, this was an important, productive game for Fuller.

DE George Johnson - Johnson was comfortably on the 53-man roster even before the Bills game. At this point, he's making a case to be a regular part of the rotation at defensive end after recording another 1.5 sacks and three more quarterback hits on Thursday night. He's probably my biggest surprise of training camp and the preseason after looking like nothing more than a camp body at this time a month ago.

S Isa Abdul-Quddus - With DeJon Gomes on injured reserve, a spot is up for grabs at safety. After starting and picking off his second pass of the preseason on Thursday night, I think it's safe to say Abdul-Quddus is the frontrunner to take over Gomes' spot.

K Nate Freese - Freese won the Lions' kicker competition when the Lions cut Giorgio Tavecchio earlier this week, and he pretty much silenced his doubters by making all three of his field goal attempts in Buffalo. Two of those kicks were from 53 yards out, so that was nice to see with him locked in as the Lions' starting kicker going forward.

Losers

RB Mikel Leshoure - Leshoure's last chance to impress the coaches saw him rush for 18 yards on eight carries. By comparison, George Winn had 43 yards on 12 carries. I still don't think Winn is going to make the team over Montell Owens or an extra player at another position, but he's definitely got a better chance than Leshoure, who really showed nothing in the preseason. I just don't see how the Lions can keep Leshoure; he just doesn't bring much to the team at this point.

The fans - There's absolutely no reason for the preseason to be four games long, as evidenced by what we saw in Buffalo on Thursday night. Half of the Lions' regular starters didn't even play, and the game itself was painful to watch despite the fact that the Lions won with ease. I know the NFL is against cutting down the preseason unless they get to expand the regular season -- it's all about money, after all -- but enough is enough already. NFL fans shouldn't ever be subjected to this level of football.

The Detroit Lions finished the preseason in impressive fashion with a 23-0 win over the Buffalo Bills.

The Detroit Lions sat out quite a few starters on Thursday night, but they beat the Buffalo Bills anyway. Actually, they blew out the Bills. It wasn't even close, and the Lions cruised to a 23-0 victory in their final game of the preseason.

With so many backups getting a chance to start, it's no surprise that this game got off to a rather ugly start. The Bills got the ball first and had to punt, and the Lions followed that up with a three-and-out and punt of their own. It was more of the same for the two teams on the next three drives before the Lions finally started to move the ball. They got into Buffalo territory before things stalled, and Nate Freese gave them a 3-0 lead with a perfect 53-yard field goal.

After a couple more punts, the Lions added to their lead by capitalizing on an interception by Isa Abdul-Quddus. The pick gave the Lions the ball at the Buffalo 26, and Kellen Moore found Jeremy Ross for a 1-yard touchdown a few plays later. This made it 10-0 Lions.

Following three more punts, the Lions got the ball back near midfield with 41 seconds left in the second quarter. Moore found Eric Ebron for 14 yards, George Winn for 8 yards and Corey Fuller for 25 yards and a touchdown just before halftime. Suddenly the Lions had a 17-0 lead, and given how things went for Buffalo's offense in this game, it might as well have been a 50-0 lead.

The second half, unsurprisingly, opened with another pair of punts. Then the Lions did a favor to everybody and ran 8:03 off the clock with a 14-play drive. The drive actually only covered 45 yards, and it ended with another 53-yard field goal by Freese -- this time he banged it in off the left upright -- but it was nice to see a possession actually run some clock and end with something other than a punt.

The Bills' next possession actually ended with something other than a punt as well. They didn't manage to score, though. Instead, Jordan Palmer was picked off by Mohammed Seisay, who returned the interception 32 yards to the Buffalo 27. This led to another Freese field goal (from 28 yards out), giving the Lions a 23-0 lead.

Palmer was picked off again on the Bills' next drive. This time Nate Ness got in on the action by managing to get two feet down inbounds on a play close to the sideline. The Lions were unable to do anything with this turnover since they turned the ball over on downs four plays later, but it didn't matter since the Bills quickly went three-and-out yet again. Once the Lions got the ball back, they simply ran the final 6:41 off the clock, clinching their 23-0 victory.

With the preseason now over, the Lions will turn their attention to cutting down their roster to 53 players this weekend. Then, once that is taken care of, the Lions will shift their focus to their season-opening Monday night game against the New York Giants.

The Detroit Lions have ruled out half of their starters for their preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

In case you needed another example that the preseason is too long, allow me to present the Detroit Lions' list of "inactives" for Thursday night's game against the Buffalo Bills (via Tim Twentyman):

Offense

QB Matthew Stafford
RB Reggie Bush
WR Calvin Johnson
WR Golden Tate
TE Brandon Pettigrew
OG Rob Sims
C Dominic Raiola

Defense

DE Jason Jones
DT Ndamukong Suh
LB Kyle Van Noy
CB Rashean Mathis
S James Ihedigbo
S Don Carey

Clearly, the Lions are being extra careful by not even risking injuries with many of their starters. That's the right move in my book, even if it makes Thursday's preseason finale even more meaningless than it already was.

With the Lions ruling out so many starters, the following players are in the starting lineup against Buffalo (again, via Twentyman): Dan Orlovsky (QB), Theo Riddick (RB), Kevin Ogletree (WR), Kris Durham (WR), Joseph Fauria (TE), Garrett Reynolds (LG), Travis Swanson (C), Devin Taylor (DE), Nick Fairley (DT), Tahir Whitehead (OLB), Bill Bentley (CB) and Isa Abdul-Quddus (S).

If nothing else, Thursday's game will provide an outstanding opportunity to many of the players who are fighting for roster spots. With many starters taking the night off, the backups will get even more of a chance to play, and several guys could really help their chances of making the 53-man roster.

Here are 10 things to watch in the Detroit Lions' preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

The Detroit Lions are set to take on the Buffalo Bills on the road on Thursday night. Here are 10 things to keep an eye on during the game:

1. The "inactives" list

Players aren't officially declared inactive in the preseason, but it will be very interesting to see how many guys are ruled out before Thursday's game. The Lions aren't necessarily dealing with a ton of injuries, but I would expect several guys to sit out the preseason finale, including some starters. It remains to be seen if Matthew Stafford will play, but I wouldn't expect guys like Reggie Bush (who sat out a couple practices to "rest" this week) and Calvin Johnson to be on the field for any game action in Buffalo. There's really just no point in risking injury at this stage of the preseason.

2. George Winn, Mikel Leshoure and Montell Owens

These three players could be competing for only one spot depending on how the numbers shake out. Owens seems to have a bit of an edge right now because of his special teams contributions, but there's still time for Winn and Leshoure to make one final positive impression before the final cuts are made. This game will be extremely important for them.

3. The wide receiver battle

Similarly, there's a group of players battling for a limited number of spots at wide receiver. Ryan Broyles, Kris Durham, Kevin Ogletree and Corey Fuller could be competing for only two or three spots, meaning at least one wide receiver is going to be the odd man out. It's nice that the Lions are actually facing a tough decision here because they have so much talent at this position for a change, and all of these guys could use a strong finish to the preseason.

4. Cornelius Lucas vs. Michael Williams

As his playing time has increased in recent weeks, Williams has started to make a pretty strong case to be the Lions' No. 4 offensive tackle over Lucas. Given that Lucas was the Lions' top undrafted free agent signing this year and Williams only switched from tight end to offensive tackle a few months ago, Lucas has been the favorite for that spot for quite some time. However, if Williams has another solid game, perhaps he will be the one who ends up actually making the team.

5. Tahir Whitehead's encore

Whitehead started at strongside linebacker last week, and he put together an amazing performance: 10 solo tackles, three sacks and four tackles for loss. Chances are he will start again this week, and with Kyle Van Noy looking like he will miss at least the first part of the regular season with a potential sports hernia injury, Whitehead could cement his case to be the starting SAM linebacker going forward.

6. Chris Greenwood

Greenwood has already outlasted Jonte Green, who was let go in the first round of cuts. However, to make sure he sticks around on the 53-man roster instead of being relegated to the practice squad again, Greenwood needs to finish the preseason with a strong outing. He's hoping to make the team as the sixth cornerback, but there's no guarantee that the Lions will keep that many around. He needs to finish the preseason on a positive note.

7. The backup safeties

The Lions could decide to go with only five cornerbacks if they want to make room for five safeties. With DeJon Gomes on injured reserve, both Jerome Couplin and Isa Abdul-Quddus could make the team, although that might depend on Don Carey's status going forward after he suffered a hamstring injury last week. In any case, Couplin and Abdul-Quddus have really come on strong in recent weeks, and another solid performance from them could send Greenwood or even Carey packing.

8. Turnovers

The Lions haven't exactly done a good job of taking care of the ball so far this preseason. Granted, some of the turnover problems have involved players who will either be off the team in a few days or in a backup role in the regular season, but this is still a team-wide issue. Quite simply, they have got to protect the football.

9. Penalties

Penalties have also been a team-wide issue. Part of that stems from the increase in penalties across the NFL this preseason, but the Lions have been pretty sloppy in this department. They need to start cleaning things up and get this issue under control before the regular season begins.

10. Lions' overall health

Avoiding injuries in the preseason is always a top priority, and it's really the top priority for the preseason finale. The last thing the Lions need is for a starter or key backup to get hurt in the final game of the preseason, so here's to everybody staying healthy on Thursday night in Buffalo.
