Most 2015 NFL mock drafts have the Detroit Lions going running back or defensive tackle in the second round. Is that the right approach?

After adding offensive guard Laken Tomlinson in the first round on Thursday night, the Detroit Lions are expected to turn their focus to running back, defensive tackle and cornerback on Day 2 of the 2015 NFL Draft. Those are their three biggest remaining needs, and there are a lot of attractive options still left at all three positions.

Based on a small sample of Round 2 mock drafts, it seems like most people are expecting the Lions to go with a running back or defensive tackle in the second round:

SB Nation: DT Jordan Phillips (Oklahoma)

As you can see, there is a lot of love for Tevin Coleman and various defensive tackles. That makes a lot of sense, as the Lions could take a player like Coleman to improve their running game, or they could take the top defensive tackle on the board to bolster their depth at that position. A cornerback would also make a lot of sense, and I could even see the Lions taking a wide receiver or offensive tackle if one of the top players left at those positions falls to the 54th overall pick.

What do you want the Lions to do in the second round of the draft?

Positions (first round)

Defensive tackle - 29

Offensive tackle - 18

Running back - 5

Center - 3

Cornerback - 3

Defensive end - 1

This has been a bizarre year for Lions mock drafts. Back in February, defensive tackle was the overwhelming favorite for the Lions with people anticipating the departure of Ndamukong Suh. Then the Lions did actually lose Suh, as well as Nick Fairley, and offensive tackle surprisingly jumped to the front of the pack. Actually, more people had the Lions taking a running back in the first round than a defensive tackle in our mock draft database from a few weeks ago.

Now, though, despite nothing really changing, defensive tackle is once again the overwhelming favorite. I'm not sure what has caused people to suddenly jump back on the defensive tackle bandwagon, but this is more in line with what we saw back in February.

Players (first round)

DT Malcom Brown (Texas) - 18

OT D.J. Humphries (Florida) - 5

OT Ereck Flowers (Miami FL) - 5

RB Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin) - 4

OT La'el Collins (LSU) - 4

OT Andrus Peat (Stanford) - 3

C Cameron Erving (Florida State) - 3

DT Danny Shelton (Washington) - 3

DT Eddie Goldman (Florida State) - 3

DT Arik Armstead (Oregon) - 2

DT Jordan Phillips (Oklahoma) - 2

CB Kevin Johnson (Wake Forest) - 2

RB Todd Gurley (Georgia) - 1

OT T.J. Clemmings (Pittsburgh) - 1

DE Shane Ray (Missouri) - 1

DT Grady Jarrett (Clemson) - 1

CB Byron Jones (Connecticut) - 1

This isn't a huge surprise with defensive tackle back on top, but Malcom Brown is the clear favorite for the No. 23 overall pick. Once again, this is in line with what we saw back in February. A few weeks ago, Melvin Gordon shockingly jumped to the top of the list, but most people are now once again expecting the Lions to take Brown with their first-round pick.

Shocker. Not a whole lot is going to surprise me this Thursday night, but if the Buccaneers opt to go with someone other than Jameis with the No. 1 overall pick, I will likely spit out my beer. Winston is the No. 1 quarterback prospect by a mile. The Bucs need a QB. It's simple.

I think this pick is 50/50 between Mariota and Leonard Williams. There's also a pretty decent chance that a different team -- such as the Chargers or Eagles -- trades up to the No. 2 spot and snags Mariota themselves. The Titans reportedly believe Zach Mettenberger is their QB of the future. I think they're crazy to believe that. Mariota has plenty of upside and should be the pick here.

Consensus tells us that the Jaguars are likely going to select a pass rusher with the third overall pick. I'd have to agree, and I believe that Dante Fowler is the right pick here. Fowler is the most well-rounded edge rusher and is at the top of his class.

Here's a bit of a surprise pick. Most mocks will slot Beasley or another edge rusher here, but are we sure the Redskins would pass up on arguably the top player in the draft? They already signed Stephen Paea, but Williams could still come in and command a lot of snaps as a rookie 2-gap specialist.

In a perfect world, the Jets would love to have Mariota fall right into their laps, but Vic Beasley is a pretty nice consolation prize. Todd Bowles needs a talented edge rusher in his 3-4 scheme, and Beasley would be a good fit here.

The Bears truly need help everywhere. I have a feeling they will go with the best player available at No. 7 overall and Cooper will be on the top of their board. With Brandon Marshall gone, the Bears pick up Cooper and continue to have a top-tiered receiving corps in the NFL.

I've seen a ton of reports suggesting the Falcons are almost a lock to take Dupree if he's available. I often ignore these rumors and consider them smokescreens, but it just makes too much sense. The Falcons are in desperate need of an edge rusher and Dupree is an explosive athlete with plenty of upside. It also helps that he doesn't have any weed allegations surrounding him, unlike a couple of his peers.

I still have him as my No. 9 receiver in the draft, but for whatever reason many were surprised to see his 4.24 40-yard dash, despite displaying elite speed on tape. Perriman a bit of a project, but provides an infinite amount of upside.

Clemmings and Cedric Ogbuehi. I also have a feeling that Jim Caldwell and company are looking to draft a guy who can play the left side while moving Riley Reiff to the right. The Lions brought in Humphries for a pre-draft visit earlier this month, and I believe he would be a nice fit for them moving forward.

A look at eight different 2015 NFL mock draft scenarios for the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions can go in a number of different directions in the 2015 NFL Draft, especially in the early rounds. They have four main needs that jump out -- running back, offensive line, defensive tackle and cornerback -- but only three picks in the first four rounds. As a result, the Lions will have to be very wise about how they address each of those needs unless they are able to secure additional picks via a trade.

With this in mind, I took to First-Pick.com and went through eight different mock draft scenarios for the Lions. Take a look:

Scenario 1: Offensive tackle in the first

Round 1 (23): OT D.J. Humphries (Florida)
Round 2 (54): DT Michael Bennett (Ohio State)
Round 3 (88): WR Tyler Lockett (Kansas State)
Round 5 (168): RB Josh Robinson (Mississippi State)
Round 6 (200): OG Quinton Spain (West Virginia)
Round 7 (240): CB Curtis Riley (Fresno State)

This scenario focuses on improving the offensive and defensive lines early in the draft, and it also focuses on making an upgrade at receiver and returner. The result is running back and cornerback being pushed aside until Day 3, but some positions are simply going to have to wait to be addressed until later in the draft.

Scenario 2: Running back in the first

Round 1 (23): RB Todd Gurley (Georgia)
Round 2 (54): OT Donovan Smith (Penn State)
Round 3 (88): DT Gabe Wright (Auburn)
Round 5 (168): CB Damian Swann (Georgia)
Round 6 (200): WR Mario Alford (West Virginia)
Round 7 (240): OG Jarvis Harrison (Texas A&M)

I personally don't expect Todd Gurley to fall to the 23rd overall pick, but this scenario assumes he ends up in Detroit. The Lions could then shift their focus to the lines on Day 2 before hitting on some other needs on Day 3.

Scenario 3: Interior offensive lineman in the first

Round 1 (23): C Cameron Erving (Florida State)
Round 2 (54): RB Tevin Coleman (Indiana)
Round 3 (88): CB Alex Carter (Stanford)
Round 5 (168): DT Darius Philon (Arkansas)
Round 6 (200): WR Stefon Diggs (Maryland)
Round 7 (240): SS Brian Blechen (Utah)

Rather than add a true tackle, what if the Lions go with Cameron Erving? He can play tackle, but his best position is center, and he could very well end up at guard if the Lions take him. This would give them an upgrade at one of their starting spots on the O-line, and they could continue to upgrade their running game with Tevin Coleman in the second round.

Scenario 4: Cornerback in the first

Round 1 (23): CB Kevin Johnson (Wake Forest)
Round 2 (54): OG Ali Marpet (Hobart)
Round 3 (88): DT Marcus Hardison (Arizona State)
Round 5 (168): WR Titus Davis (Central Michigan)
Round 6 (200): RB Karlos Williams (Florida State)
Round 7 (240): DT Ellis McCarthy (UCLA)

Cornerback isn't a pressing need in the short term, but Kevin Johnson might be too talented to pass up. Either way, a cornerback in the first round would make things really interesting for the Lions on the final two days of the draft.

Scenario 5: Defensive tackle in the first

Round 1 (23): DT Malcom Brown (Texas)
Round 2 (54): RB Jay Ajayi (Boise State)
Round 3 (88): OT Ty Sambrailo (Colorado State)
Round 5 (168): OG Jeremiah Poutasi (Utah)
Round 6 (200): CB JaCorey Shepherd (Kansas)
Round 7 (240): WR J.J. Nelson (UAB)

When it comes to drafting a defensive tackle, I think there's better value in the second round, but I'm actually pleased with how this scenario turned out. Malcom Brown could be an immediate contributor on the D-line, and Jay Ajayi could make an immediate impact at running back. The hope would be that one of those two offensive linemen would be able to step in and start as a rookie, and there would also be an expectation for J.J. Nelson to immediately step in as the Lions' returner.

Scenario 6: Safety in the first

Round 1 (23): SS Landon Collins (Alabama)
Round 2 (54): RB Duke Johnson (Miami FL)
Round 3 (88): OT Rob Havenstein (Wisconsin)
Round 5 (168): DT Derrick Lott (Tennessee-Chattanooga)
Round 6 (200): WR Antwan Goodley (Baylor)
Round 7 (240): CB Bryce Callahan (Rice)

This is one of two "wild-card scenarios." In this particular scenario, the Lions go against their top needs and take Landon Collins. He would likely step in for James Ihedigbo at strong safety either immediately or in 2016. In any case, the Lions would have to really hit on their final five picks with them passing up a top need for a secondary one in the first round.

Scenario 7: Wide receiver in the first

Round 1 (23): WR DeVante Parker (Louisville)
Round 2 (54): OG A.J. Cann (South Carolina)
Round 3 (88): RB Jeremy Langford (Michigan State)
Round 5 (168): DT Louis Trinca-Pasat (Iowa)
Round 6 (200): CB Ladarius Gunter (Miami FL)
Round 7 (240): OT Jamon Brown (Louisville)

Along the same lines, what if the Lions really shock people by going wide receiver in the first round? Okay, I guess it wouldn't be that shocking considering DeVante Parker visited the Lions, but that would again leave Detroit in a situation where they would have to hit on all of their major needs after the first round.

Scenario 8: Trade down

Round 1 (31): OT Jake Fisher (Oregon)
Round 2 (44): DT Grady Jarrett (Clemson)
Round 3 (69): RB T.J. Yeldon (Alabama)
Round 3 (88): WR Tre McBride (William & Mary)
Round 5 (168): CB Lorenzo Doss (Tulane)
Round 6 (200): DE Zack Wagenmann (Montana)
Round 7 (240): OG Jon Feliciano (Miami FL)

The final scenario involves a trade where the Lions move down in the first round in exchange for moving up in the second round and getting an additional third-round pick. In terms of being able to hit on as many top needs as possible on the first two days of the draft, this is probably the best-case scenario. The Lions could get an immediate starter at tackle or guard in Jake Fisher and immediate contributors in Grady Jarrett, T.J. Yeldon and Tre McBride (as a returner). Plus, they could still add extra depth at multiple positions in the final three rounds. Trading down requires a team willing to move up, of course, but from a flexibility standpoint, this is as good as it gets for the Lions.

The Detroit Lions take Tevin Coleman with the 54th pick of the 2015 POD Community Mock Draft.

With the 54th pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2015 NFL mock draft, the Detroit Lions select Indiana running back Tevin Coleman. Jeremy Reisman is serving as the Lions' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.

After addressing offensive tackle in the first round, the Lions' top needs are defensive tackle, cornerback, running back and offensive guard. With seven corners already taken in the draft, there isn't a lot of value in that position in Round 2. Additionally, there isn't much to love about the offensive guard class this year, with A.J. Cann being really the only worthy second-round pick. Unfortunately, he was taken over 10 picks ago.

That leaves running back and defensive tackle as the two most talented positions left that address a big need. Both positions have two players who jump out as great picks at this point in the draft. For defensive tackle, Xavier Cooper and Michael Bennett provide solid value at pick No. 54. At running back, Tevin Coleman and Duke Johnson would both be fine late-second-round picks.

While addressing the defensive line is something that is undoubtedly needed -- especially after all of the turmoil that the position has gone through this offseason -- I ultimately decided that running back provided more value at this point in the draft, especially with Coleman still on the board.

I chose Coleman because he has the potential to be a three-down back, but with explosion-play potential. He isn't afraid of contact, he provides the pass blocking that Johnson lacks and he can make something out of nothing.

Last year, the Lions offense was abysmal, and a huge part of that was their lack of a running game (28th in yardage, 28th in yards per carry). With the additions of T.J. Clemmings and Tevin Coleman, the Lions now have a new dimension to their offense, while also solidifying their pass-protection issues. In the rounds that follow, I would turn my attention to the defensive side of the ball, looking to pick up a defensive tackle or cornerback in the third round of the draft.

The Detroit Lions take T.J. Clemmings with the 23rd pick of the 2015 POD Community Mock Draft.

With the 23rd pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2015 NFL mock draft, the Detroit Lions select Pittsburgh offensive tackle T.J. Clemmings. Jeremy Reisman is serving as the Lions' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.

When I first saw how the board fell to the Lions, I was extremely overwhelmed. So many prospects who have already been mocked to the Lions were still available. Only three offensive tackles have been taken off the board (not including Brandon Scherff) and only three cornerbacks, as well. I could have gone the Sean Yuille route and taken a very fine tackle in D.J. Humphries, or I could have gone the way of Alex Reno and shored up the middle of the Lions' offensive line with Cameron Erving. Oh, and to top off this burden of infinite options was a little cherry known as Todd Gurley.

Let's start with Gurley. At this point, I think he is the best player on the board, and he even fits a relative need for the Lions. But let me borrow a phrase from the dating world: "the timing just isn't right." Drafting Gurley here would put off the Lions' serious offensive line issues for another round, leaving them with, essentially, just two more picks to fix this mess. Taking a running back here would be putting the cart before the horse and would risk Gurley's development behind a poor offensive line. Gurley's injury just adds another question that the Lions should just completely avoid.

That being said, this would be an absolute ideal situation for the Lions to trade down. There would, without a doubt, be general managers lighting up the Lions' phone for a chance at Gurley this far down in the draft (Cowboys, I'm looking at you). And with so many good options for the Lions still on the table, they could still get a guy they want and pick up a mid-round draft pick to fill their current void between the third and fifth rounds.

Cornerback is another strong option here, as Marcus Peters is still surprisingly on the board, as are Kevin Johnson and -- my personal favorite -- Byron Jones. All of those players would be fine picks at this point.

But ultimately, the offensive line proved to be the best fit with need and the talent on the board. I chose T.J. Clemmings over D.J. Humphries and Cedric Ogbuehi not because of the player Clemmings is but because of the player he will be.

Clemmings is relatively new to the tackle position, but he has all of the right things to be a staple at tackle for years to come. Because of that, he has recently been shooting up mock draft boards, going 17th overall in the SB Nation mock draft, and our own Alex Reno even has him as the highest-rated tackle in this year's draft.

While Clemmings may be a bit of a project to start, he could actually fill in at the guard position immediately if the Lions are unable to fill their left guard spot during the rest of the offseason.

Clemmings' versatility, potential and pure athleticism makes him a great addition to the Lions who could provide some immediate value and long-term stability.
