The Detroit Lions collapsed before the Minnesota Vikings after a sizzling start by their offense. We take a look at the individual performances from Sunday's loss.

If you're not aware by now, Pro Football Focus is a website that focuses on grading NFL players for their individual performances based on an in-depth review of every snap for every game.
It was not a pretty game, to say the least. The offense got off to a hot start and faded away from the second quarter on. Let's take a closer look at the individual performances from Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Offense

Best Grades

Riley Reiff: +3.4
Calvin Johnson: +2.3
Cornelius Lucas: +1.6

Worst Grades

Eric Ebron: -3.2
Larry Warford: -2.1
Golden Tate: -2.0
Laken Tomlinson: -1.5
Matthew Stafford: -1.2

Analysis

You know you're having a pretty bad day when Cornelius Lucas earns one of your highest grades on offense. All kidding aside, Lucas has done a pretty solid job when the Lions need a sixth offensive lineman. On 12 total snaps, he earned a +1.3 run grade and didn't give up a single pressure (only 5 pass blocking snaps).

Despite an impressive (and arguably his best) performance in the passing game, Eric Ebron was absolutely brutal in pass protection vs. the Vikings. On just 11 pass blocking snaps, Ebron gave up three QB hurries and was given a -3.0 pass blocking grade. He now has a -2.3 pass blocking and -4.6 run blocking grade through seven weeks this year.

Matthew Stafford got out to yet another hot start, but was held in check for the rest of the game after his offensive line struggled to leave him any protection whatsoever. Stafford now sits in dead last out of 36 QBs with a -15.9 overall grade on the year.

On the bright side, Calvin Johnson is still Calvin Johnson and now has the fifth-highest grade among 107 qualifying receivers with a +10.7 overall grade. Small victories, I guess?

Defense

Best Grades

Ezekiel Ansah: +3.7
Josh Bynes: +2.6
Jason Jones: +2.1
Stephen Tulloch: +2.0
Caraun Reid: +1.7
Tahir Whitehead: +1.4

Worst Grades

Rashean Mathis: -1.8
Andre Fluellen: -1.3
Glover Quin: -1.2
Darryl Tapp: -1.0

Analysis

It's a real shame that the Lions are basically wasting Ezekiel Ansah's talent while they dissipate into the complete mess that they've become. I guess you could say that about a handful of other players on this team, but Ziggy is really having himself a hell of a year right now. And that's without a whole lot of talent next to him on the defensive line. Ziggy's 15 total pressures over the last two games account for more than half of his total pressures (28) on the entire season. He is now the third-most productive pass rushing 4-3 DE in the NFL via PFF's pass rush productivity (PRP) stat.

Josh Bynes has also been a bright spot for this defense. As DeAndre Levy's replacement at WILL, Bynes has been on the field more than any other linebacker for the Lions and has earned the highest grade (+4.2) among that unit as well. His +6.6 run defense grade is the best on the team.

The secondary was absolutely awful against the Vikings on Sunday. This could be Mathis' final year in the NFL, because I'm not sure how much he has left in the tank at this point. He was targeted eight time against the Vikings and gave up six catches for 112 yards, a touchdown and a 156.3 QB rating. Not good.

Special Teams

Best Grades

Sam Martin: +1.6

Worst Grades

Don Carey: -1.5

Analysis

I hate special teams.

You can sense the tide is turning in the Lions locker room.

When the Detroit Lions fell to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, the mood in the locker room was that of a funeral:

There was a blood-soaked bandage on his left forearm, near the elbow. He began picking at a bandage around his left wrist. His throwing arm looked beat up too. It's no wonder he put on long sleeves for that press conference.

The big toe on his left foot was blue.

Two toes on his right foot were taped.

Players began filing out of the locker room, one after another, leaving behind bottles and trash and banana peels. But Stafford just kept sitting there in the corner, breathing just right, trying to soothe his battered ribs.

Five weeks later, nothing has changed. The Lions dropped another game to the Vikings. Matthew Stafford was broken and beaten, and had another appointment with the x-ray machine. And the Lions players continue to be somber and frustrated. Here's a sample of their reactions after the game.

Golden Tate, who clearly wears his emotions on his sleeve, looked despondent in the locker room:

Golden Tate just looks shellshocked every week. He doesn't know how to handle losing. Prime candidate to be totally lionized.

— Justin Rogers (@Justin_Rogers) October 25, 2015

To Tate's credit, he was much more upbeat and positive with his words, saying, "It’s tough on us right now, but we’ve just got to keep working. Stay together and keep moving together and there’s going to be change, it’s going to happen. We’ve just got to stay with it."

Though DeAndre Levy didn't play again on Sunday, he did have some strong words about the Lions' performance:

DeAndre Levy: "We got to figure out why we get to a certain point, and just, like ... stop f***ing up."

Josh Bynes has seemed like the Lions' interim locker room leader while the defense was missing some key players, but Bynes was in no mood to rally the team after this loss:

Fledgling locker room leader Josh Bynes, decided to clean out his locker and walk past media waiting to talk to him today. That was nice.

Eric Ebron wasn't about to accept any silver lining from his own performance:

Eric Ebron: "I'm not having a good season if we're not having a good season. We're losing and that's not (expletive) good."

But in the end, the emotion that stood out was befuddlement. The Detroit Lions are losing and no one can seem to figure out why:

More details on the Detroit Lions' loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Sunday's game marked Matthew Stafford's 84th career start for the Detroit Lions, tying a franchise record with Greg Landry. Assuming Stafford's hand injury doesn't hold him out of next week's game in London, he will break the record against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hard to say. The ball is incredibly close to the goal line, but I have a hard time believing it would be overturned by replay. In the end, I think Jim Caldwell did the right thing by saving a much-needed timeout. The Lions should have absolutely been able to score from there with three chances, anyway.

Trying to make sense of the Lions' collapse against the Vikings.

I know the main narrative for the game will be the offense's disappearing act after the first quarter, but someone needs to take this Detroit Lions pass defense to task. They came into the game with the worst ranked pass defense by completion percentage and passer rating. Today, Teddy Bridgewater lit them up for 316 yards, 2 touchdowns and a passer rating of 118.3. All of those are season highs for Bridgewater (except for passer rating; Bridgewater had a rating of 120.6 in Week 2...against the Lions).

Now to the offense. The Lions lost control of this game in the second and third quarter, when the Lions offense failed to earn more than 10 yards during that stretch. Despite early success, the Lions abandoned the run game, and the Vikings teed off on Stafford. When the Lions returned to the run game, it was much too late.

Offensive line: still a disaster.

Haloti Ngata looked great in his first game back from injury, bringing pressure to Bridgewater on a fairly consistent basis.

Killer stat from the Lions defense: Minnesota was 5-13 on third down. That may not seem too bad, but several of those conversions were early in drives and third-and-long situations. A defensive holding call on Quandre Diggs converted a third and 11 early in the third quarter. The Vikings went on to score a touchdown later in the drive.

All sorts of coverage breakdowns on defense for the Lions. Darius Slay, Josh Bynes, and -- most of all -- Rashean Mathis appeared to be guilty of mental lapses.

Let's end on some positives: taking away one play, the Lions held the Vikings to 65 rushing yards at 1.9 a carry.

Eric Ebron looked really good in his game back. It's a shame the Lions lost sight of him in the second half.

Matt Prater, still perfect (not counting blocked extra points).

A promising start to a Sunday was brutally erased by a vicious Vikings pass rush and a Lions defense that couldn't catch a break.

Coming off of an agonizing struggle with the Chicago Bears that was capped off with a win, the Lions looked to build onto their victory by taking down another NFC North rival. The trip to Minnesota had not gone favorably for the Lions, but there was hope that the adjustments made would produce a different matchup.

First half

The Lions stormed out of the gate. On the third play, Matthew Stafford went out of the shotgun and found Calvin Johnson deep for 46 yards. Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah took the Lions down to the goal line and Stafford found Johnson again for a touchdown to strike first. On the first drive for the Vikings, Teddy Bridgewater abused the Lions secondary. The Lions would hold the Vikings to a field goal, and once again, as was with the season, Peterson struggled to contribute to the offense beyond one wild spinning move.

It was now the time for Eric Ebron's return. The returning Lions tight end kicked off the drive by busting out for 65 yards and quickly capped it a few plays later with a seven yard touchdown catch.

After the first quarter the Vikings tried to find their feet against the Lions defense. Stefon Diggs busted out a 30 yard play, but a key sack on Bridgewater by Ngata would hold that drive to a field goal. On the next Vikings drive, Charles Johnson would get the Vikings to the red zone, but Adrian Peterson fumbled the football and the Lions recovered, which would lead to a Matt Prater field goal.

Now the Vikings had the ball back and marched down the field. Zach Line was left unguarded as he made a massive gain on a Bridgewater reception. Although it would look as if the Lions would once again hold on the goal line, Bridgewater found Kyle Rudolph unguarded in the endzone and the Vikings would have their first touchdown, although they would miss the extra point.

With a field goal to end the half, the Vikings were only down by two points. The Vikings had adjusted. They were bringing blitzes on Stafford to prevent him from making deep passes and the Minnesota offense had moved leaning on Bridgewater's passing game. Whenever Teddy stayed upright (albeit the Lions would have quite a few sacks) he found ways to make the Lions sting.

Second half

Pressure started to get in on Teddy Bridgewater, but each time he managed to get a pass off he'd connect with Wallace or Stefon Diggs for a large gain. It finally burned the Lions as Bridgewater went deep for Diggs (who burned Mathis) for a diving touchdown.

The Lions would go three-and-out. After a fully quiet day, Adrian Peterson finally beat the Lions line on the edge, beating Travis Lewis, beating James Ihedigbo and taking the Vikings to the three-yard line. Another Lions goal line stand would hold the Vikings to a field goal, and now an eight point lead.

The Vikings had yet to punt in the game.

The offensive line for the Lions was getting abused now. Stafford could no longer get off the deep passes that had gotten the Lions on the board early and was now taking sack after sack. The line wasn't executing or Stafford wasn't making the proper protection calls; either way, things were breaking down. The boos were beginning to rain down at Ford Field. With the offense unable to stay on the field, the defense began to let up more yards to Adrian Peterson and the Vikings no-huddle poured it on. The secondary continued to break down as another giant gain was given up to Adam Thielin. Stafford was on the sidelines in pain, favoring his hand.

The Lions once again held the Vikings to a field goal on the goal line, but they were now down by 11 points. Stafford stuffed his hand into the glove and went out to try to lead the Lions back from the deficit. But Stafford would find nothing on the field. He would take another sack as massive pressure and penalties would back the Lions up. On third-and-13 the Lions decided to pitch to Theo Riddick rather than attempt a shot. The fans knew it and the boos were heard again. The punt came again.

The Lions had seven yards of total offense in the second half at this point.

Now they were running. Down 11, the Lions suddenly decided it was important to establish a run game, but it wasn't like Stafford was making throws either as he plunked one on the ground in front of Golden Tate. After that, Stafford took his seventh sack of the game, this time for a loss of 12 yards.

The Vikings began to burn clock. The Lions got the ball back with three minutes and change and started to put together some semblance of a drive. Theo Riddick caught a pass and dashed. Ebron, Tim Wright, and Johnson caught passes from Stafford. Facing what looked to be another sack, Stafford made a poor decision to throw, the ball was batted sky-high, but Calvin Johnson bailed him out by pulling it down at the one-yard line. Beating two or three Vikings in an unbelievable display of athleticism to use his size and power to overwhelm those around him, Calvin was doing all he could to keep his team in the game.

It was promptly wasted by attempting to rush three screens at the goal line. Quickly, it was fourth down. The Lions went for it down 11. Stafford dropped back and made a pass out to Theo Riddick. The pass fell off his fingers.

The Vikings took a safety after a drive, and the Lions had the ball back with a minute to go. With the state of this game, one question remained: Oh mama. Can this really be the end? Well...

Final Score: 28-19

No real analysis to give here. I'll leave that to Jeremy for the quick thoughts and divert my own darkness to another article for the week. I only ask that in the midst of your agony at this Lions loss you take a moment to consider a few thoughts to basketball coach Flip Saunders, who passed away on Sunday. He once coached in Detroit for the Pistons and was battling Hodgkin's lymphoma. Do what you must to give a few thoughts to his memory.
